I equate percussive technique with looping: Judicious use can be interesting. Overuse is boring.

A little percussive move goes a long way https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NSLH9nhvKLw
This song gets better every time you listen to it. Forever. It’s super fun to play and sing too. Happy Friday. |

I really like percussion when I listen to Santana. Acoustic guitar music, not so much.

I enjoy it as long as it doesn't become the main focus of the piece. I use it on occasion when the piece benefits it, although I'm far from "good" at it currently.

Jon Gomm is the king of "percussive guitar". He mainly plays his own compositions, and manages to make the percussive elements actually work. Especially: he doesn't do it in boring and repetitive ways.
Many other who say they play "percussive guitar" are just boring. His new Ibanez signature guitar looks pretty good, too, whatever music you play with your fingers. Not cheap. Sounds good to me. Has lots of options to make amplified sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9GRnsPo0iE

edit: Ibanez has some history in building prominent players exactly what they want, functionally and esthetically. I'm taking Jon'sword that the new design lets him play even better.

As many have told before, it is often overused to the point where listening become tiring. That being said, when used at the service of the piece, it can really give more depth to the solo instrumental repertoire.
Here is one of my favorite fingerstyle player covering purple rain, the percussive slaps on the lower strings really enhances the overall rendition: I would encourage you to check other of his covers. Best, Last edited by Vaillant75; 03-04-2021 at 12:48 AM. |

This isn't too bad in that respect but he gets a bit carried away with the drum "solos". Perhaps following the AC/DC original? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMPWfHqVj40
