I actually spoke with Dennis Mickley at Beard, inquiring directly about this and other material and design choices. Dennis relayed what many of us believed: that the same Finnish birch they have used on high-end resonators for years was not selected for economy but rather because it supports the tone they were looking for, particularly in combination with the many other innovative design choices. They procure top qualilty birch laminate, and remember it's the same stuff that has been leveraged for years in their 5K resonators. As many suspected, it wasn't a cost cutting measure at all, but rather, a mindful material/design choice. I can tell you that, from my perspective, it works fantastically. This guitar is exceptional in every way. Build quality is second to none I either own or have had through, including Collings, Froggy Bottom, Ted Thompson, McIlroy, Lowden, Goodall, SCGC, Kronbauer, Fox, and a few others I am sure I am forgetting. Craftsmanship is as good and as clean as it gets inside and out. This guitar is a winner, and Dennis attributes that to this: "I really think the key is the level of innovation of Paul Beard and the crew, and the fact that the same 6 guys build all the guitars." As most of us have consistently felt, it's more about the design and the build than the materials anyway. But....these materials work superbly given that excellent build. Check out how carefully they are made:

This is an absolute winner. My hat is off to Mr. Beard and his crew.
