Default Apollo Picks: The Norman Blake Picks

Hey Folks,

Coming soon! The Norman Blake Picks.

It has been amazing to work with Norman on this. We’ve been going back and forth on prototypes for both a mandolin and guitar pick. These will be made to his exact preferences. He knows just what he’s lookin’ for and the picks will have the exact shapes, thicknesses, materials and bevels (in terms of both angle and amount) that suit him just right.

I’ve gotta say, Norman is such a kind, gentle, and open-minded individual. Really, I haven’t met anyone quite like him. He makes you feel like a lifelong friend. To talk with him is like an education on how to treat people in deeply respectful manner, and I aspire to be more like him.

These picks should be available on the site in a week or two. Maybe even three, we aren’t rushing this.
Have a great day,

-Nik

p.s. Norman does not have or use the internet. He lives out in the country in Georgia and would rather be pickin’ his guitar on his porch rather than scrolling through a Facebook newsfeed. Pretty cool if you ask me. Anyways, to help get the word out please consider sharing the posts about these Norman Blake Picks.

Wow, what an exciting collaboration. Congratulations on that. Eager to see the picks released. Anything else you can share about ballpark thickness and shape/size?

Thanks! There will be three picks in this collection. Norman and I worked on 2 for guitar and 1 for mandolin. The guitar picks will measure in at 1.4 and 1.5mm. The mandolin pick will be 1.5mm!

Congrats on this, Nik. Norman is one of my favorite pickers and just about everyone's favorite human.

Dragging up an old thread. Just got one of these. Really liking it. Much warmer tone than my BC, especially on the B and E strings. Jury's still out on strumming, but for flatpicking, I'm sold.

I got one of the NB picks when Nik first posted this….it’s one of my main three picks…..the others being Charmed Life and BlueChip…..great picks to be had these days…

Somewhat recently, I did a short recording of my ‘32 Martin 1-17 with two Shure SM81’s x/y pattern pointed at the 12th fret and a UAD Volt 2. The SM81’s are well-known for their flat, ‘true’ recordings without adding nor taking away much. I never thought about it this way because I was showcasing the guitar, not the pick — but it is a NB from Nik. For me, Nick’s picks are warm and amazingly sleek play in across the strings.

The sample is with bare fingers, medium nail. The 2nd sample is the NB 1.4 beveled off-set small tri. They’re both housed in the same clip below, you’ll catch were the tunes change.

Thanks, Nik; I hope I don’t hurt any future sales!

I own a few. The original material is quite nice. I have a couple that Nik made out of vintage casein that I like even more. One in particular from a golden colored vintage casein is surprisingly brighter than the others. Don't usually play with it, but there have been times when I really like the tone.
