Had a close encounter with a Pack Rat in Arizona a few years ago. Whilst staying in a 'Rustic pine cabin' (shed) on a working ranch we settled into bed only to be woken by a symphony of scratching and scurrying around the cabin. I shined my torch around to find a Pack Rat sat on the bed headboard looking down at us.
I later discovered these critters are also referred to as 'Trader Rats' due to them dropping anything they may be carrying in favour of something more appealing. Apparently, they are particularly fond of shiny objects so I was glad he didn't find the key to the hire car on the table. Now you tell me they are great chewers, they don't seem so cute and appealing. |

The Northern flying squirrel--very common in northwestern Washington state (where original poster resides--according to original poster's tag line, anyhow)--is very active at night (even through the winter), though if it's happening exclusively at night that specific rodent is probably not the wire-chewing culprit, unless original poster lives in a heavily forested environment (the Northern flying squirrel's preferred habitat).

The insurance folks consider squirrels as rodents, hence their damage isn't covered by the homeowner policy. I was told this by a guy who learned the expensive lesson when they got into his home a did a job on it!

Rats like the wiring on Boss Mustangs too, I had to do a restoration on a '73 Boss Mustang and the rats chewed the engine harness as well as the interior harnesses, was quite the job to repair it all.
