Love Jim's guitar however I am going "back strip" with the lighter wood on the new build.

Going to be a nice build. What's the Fan fret scales for this build ?

The color of the Panama is quite unique and unusual. Very nice !

Thanks for the kind words and following the thread! I actually tortured Michael over choice of back/sides (Michael's not a thread lurker but if he ever starts reading forum postings again, sorry Michael) before settling on rosewood, because I just like rosewood guitars.

Regarding multiscale configuration, I thought it would be helpful to quote Michael's perspective on scale options for the fan fret.

"The two MS scales I have used are 25.75-25" and 26-25.4". A quick way to think about these is the 25.75-25" is a bit longer on the bass and a bit shorter on the treble, than a standard scale. Or, a standard scale guitar is around the D/G strings. Acoustically this translates into more power and crispness on the low end and sweeter high end. The second MS (26-25.4") is just longer on the bass and adds more power and crispness. This is also a more moderate fan in terms of the offset between the two E's. With all this in mind I can make the scales any length. We don't have to stick with these, but I have found these work well for me and my customers over time."

I had earlier purchased, and sold, an Avian Skylark to test my liking for a fan fret guitar. The Avian uses Michael's 26-25.4 configuration. After considering my goals, consulting with a couple of AGFers, and recalling that I adjusted to the Avian pretty effortlessly, I decided on the shorter scale configuration. (Also, my Michaud JR is a cannon - and I say this compared to Martin Dreadnaughts - so if I want convincing bass, I have that option).

My GC and OO Bashkins are both 12 fret guitars and I think Michael does really fine work balancing tone across strings so I'm excited to see how the tonal qualities work with his multiscale configuration, on a luthier built instrument with woods selected to tease out the sustain and overtones I prefer in my style of play.

Hahah thank you, yes the Rosette is cool. in the end i'm note quite sure what scales you decided to use for your fan fret. You just quoted Michael, but what have you decided ?

As you are talking about Bashkin’s with LS Redwood tops here’s mine. It has flamed mahogany back and sides and is amazing.

Scroll down to see it, no cutaway and slotted headstock.

Aesthetically (to my eye) I prefer no back strip on this particular back. Mother Nature has offered one, herself, and the visual flow of the grain and coloration across the back is simply beautiful.

I would consider, though, a short segment of inlay (just south of the waist) as a decorative element to echo the design in the rosette...jmho

I'm leaning in a particular way but will keep my thoughts to myself.

What do you think, AGF?

I can work with Michael on the back strip size/design/colors, but the fundamental decision comes down to au naturel or decoratif?

So yummy. On the 00 in particular, Michael's slotted headstocks are to die for, and I wish I had one on mine. I just feel they balance out the guitar and give it a level of sophistication.

My Avian Skylark was configured with slotted head, bevel & fan fret, which for under $1500 was mildly ludicrous. Does it compare with Michael's luthier built guitars speaking in absolute terms? Of course not, and it's wild to even think about what an LS sinker top over mahogany must feel like, because the Adi/Hog I have is already so good. But at that price point the Avian offers an incredible feature set and it's too bad that venture did not pan out.

Joel, you sort of read my mind and that's why I asked Michael for mockups of the rosette and end graft...looking forward to sharing and asking for all of your ideas when they come in...

Just a minor clarification: LS (Lucky Strike) redwood is not 'sinker' redwood but refers to a specific log harvested by Craig & Alicia Carter.

You can learn more about all of the Carter redwoods in my post #40 on page 3 of this thread.

My error - I remember reading this when I first encountered the term - thanks for helping me keep it straight.

Default Rosette and End Graft Designs

Hi everyone, here are the rosette and end graft designs Michael shared with me today.

Since the guitar is not going to bear Michael's signature "leaf" art-deco headstock pattern but will have Jimmi's Japanese maple inlay instead, I did not have the advantage of a strong motif, as on a traditional Bashkin, to echo on the rosette (e.g. Michael's "torched wood" compass inlays) or the end graft (e.g. his beautiful interweaving geometric designs which remind me of the body of turn of the century Tiffany lamps).

Absent the anchoring motif, we explored the idea of borrowing the woods used in Jimmi's marquetry, koa and walnut, instead. Hence the ebony binding will have koa and walnut purfling, and the rosette will consist of two concentric circles, one of koa and one of walnut.

For the rosette, I asked Michael to think of a way to fit form to function with respect to the angled fingerboard (fan fret). Here are his suggestions.

Rosette Designs.jpg

For the end graft, I suggested we replicate the hallmark "semi-circle tab" at the top of Michael's headstock, by creating two semi-circles, one walnut and one koa. This design, it turns out, bears more than a passing resemblance to Japanese maple seeds and thus presented a very subtle coherence to the overall guitar design, considering Jimmi's wonderful work on the headstock, a "seed to tail" secret message, if you will, for one paying close attention. Here are Michael's proposals.

End Graft Designs.jpg

I'm going to take some time to think about these, and also how they impact the still-open back strip question, but I thought it might be interesting to share the thinking that has gone in to date as I continue to crowdsource everyone's incredibly valuable opinions!

As a final thought, while the individual designs are not as decorative as some of Michael's amazing guitars, I'm really grateful for how seriously Michael is taking my desire for a minimalist theme, and his willingness to depart from his more signature presentation. I do wonder whether the guitar will completely lose all secondary market value because it will hardly be recognizable as a Bashkin (visually speaking)...but if that was a real concern I probably wouldn't be doing a commission build, and the hope is that this one is a lifer anyway.
