Default Northwood 000-14 Cocobolo SOLD (Again)

Welcome to a life-changing guitar -- at least for me.

This deep-bodied 000-14 in Engelmann Spruce and Cocobolo has given me so much joy. It is my only acoustic guitar and the only one you would ever need at LOWERED: SOLD shipped (CONUS) and PP'l for AGF members.

I've been on AGF for a few years now and this is my first classified ad, so the picture posting is currently eluding me. Help is appreciated. All my Reverb reviews are five-stars. Here's the Reverb link:
https://reverb.com/item/30011943-nor...00-14-cocobolo

Northwood guitars are handmade exclusively by master luthier John McQuarrie, out of British Colombia, Canada. I have never played a guitar less than $10,000 that felt like it outclassed this Northwood. I always leave a guitar shop impressed with the one I already own.

Northwoods are rare. Northwoods in Cocobolo, practically mythical. I've only seen two Cocobolo Northwoods come up for sale on Reverb in the past four years. This guitar is at least $4,500 if purchased new. Buy it here and save big. Sorry, no trades.

So, what's so life changing? Well, the 000/OM body size is known for its versatility. Add in a deeper body and you've got resonant bloom and strong bass. Add in the Engelmann/Cocobolo solid wood combination with John's extraordinary skill, his Larrivee legacy of balance across the range, and my words fail. All I often do when I play is smirk and chuckle with happiness. I didn't know I could afford a guitar that made me feel like this. I still get chills.

The only reason I am selling this life-changing 000 is because I so rarely strum at this point that I am choosing to downsize and upgrade to the Northwood 00 in Brazilian Rosewood that was recently on AGF and Reverb. I have mixed feelings, trust me.

This guitar is in excellent condition. I had a clear pickguard and strap pin shipped to me by John McQuarrie. They were professionally installed along with a K&K Pure Mini pick-up. There are some small pin-prick sized dings along the treble side and some swirling along the pickguard and around the sound hole. That's about it in terms of wear. I'm pretty proud of that since I play it practically every day.

I am the second owner of this nine-year old guitar. I have diligently kept it properly humidified. I almost always play in my home and have played it out rarely. I have had it professionally set up twice in its three and a half years with me.

The one thing that bugs me about this guitar is that there is the slightest of separation at the heel cap. It bugs me simply because it might turn some people off, but I've been diligent in its care and I'm offering it here with confidence. It is worth noting that the guitar came to me like this and it has been stable the entire time I have owned it. I spoke immediately with John McQuarrie about it, including pictures and he gave it a clean bill of health, as have two other professional luthiers who have inspected it personally over the years.

The specs are below. I have personally measured them and checked against other sources to validate. You can find sound clips of this specific guitar by visiting the sold section of Paramount Guitars' website, which is where I bought it. Check out the embedded video for a review of a similar Cocobolo Northwood by John Fowler of Shoreline Music. Shoreline also has several Northwood 000 reviews on their YouTube page that can add further context to your discernment. Thanks AGF!

Default Updates and Lower Price

Monday bump with an update and a lower price.

Update 1: Just visited my local luthier, Pete Brown at South Jersey Guitar Repair, to have him check out this Cocobolo Northwood 000 one more time and to get a initial look at the Brazilian Northwood 00 that just came in.

"You baby your guitars as much as any of my customers. This one's ready to go to the next owner."

Lower Price: Now that the new guitar is good to go and I've got a fourth clean bill of health on this 000, I am even more motivated to sell and so am dropping the price to $2,390 shipped and PP'l (CONUS only).

Update 2: I have sold and shipped multiple guitars without incident. I will baby this when I pack it as much as I have while I've owned it, including with a D'Addario humidpak to keep any humidity concerns while in transit at bay.

Somebody buy this guitar before I add it to my Northwood arsenal. John's deep bodied 000's are comfy and sound glorious. From one of the flash builders, this would be a $4K guitar.

Every other day bump... This is a perfect guitar for the OM-lover who wishes they also an amazing dreadnought, and remarkably, it is also the perfect guitar for the dreadnought-lover who wishes they had the ability to get some amazing response with just their fingers or a light pick.

Had fun last night A/B'ing this amazing guitar with my recently-acquired Northwood 00 while watching the Sixers beat the Celtics in Boston. Joel Embiid is looking dominant. Playing back and forth between Cocobolo and Brazilian is pretty awesome too.

How about we call this the many-reasons-to-smile-last-night bump.

Sunday bump.

It still amazes me that Northwoods are as relatively inexpensive as they are. But I'm not mad, it's how I have been able to play a world-class guitar without a world-class budget. I am looking forward to passing this along to someone else who might be in a similar situation.

I never play a big three model at a guitar store, most new models costing $1,000 and up more than this, and think this comes even close to my Northwood in tone, fit or finish.

I never play a boutique brand or single luthier make that costs any where between $3-$10k and think, wow, now I know what I'm missing. I might find out what a step above feels like, but there's no way that one or two steps are worth 3-5x the money that I don't have anyway.

I became a guitar shop junky in a quest to see what outclasses this Northwood. I come away every time grateful for the guitar I already have. Now that I know myself better and have moved to a 00, I am excited thinking about someone else having a similar experience.

Happy Sunday editorial bump.
