I bought a Yamaha 12 string back in Jan 1989. It was the first guitar I bought with my own cash and my second guitar overall (the first was an electric). I still have both.

That’s one of the coolest “reimagined” instruments I’ve ever seen. What kind of tuners did you put on it? Did you make a new neck for it yourself or did you take it to a pro?

Thanks, Wade.

It's an odd story, because when I busted the headstock off at 13 years old I told my dad I'd eventually do something with it, so I sawed the neck off at the body and carried the body around with me all these years. In 2015 I saw a "take off" Taylor GS Mini neck on Reverb and picked it up for $60. I knew it would make an almost trouble-free octave mando conversion neck. I narrowed it down, filled the existing tuner holes and added a new ebony overlay. It was simple to re-drill the headstock for 8 tuners. I re-used the Taylor tuners I took off and bought another set on ebay for $15 to make up the 8 total that it required.

There's a bit more info about the conversion here:
http://web.archive.org/web/201604060...pageMando.html

I do quite a bit of instrument construction (I posted the complete construction plan here for my all hog 00 slot head that I currently play) so this wasn't difficult to make a arch top bridge and the brass tailpiece to hold the strings. The Taylor GS Mini neck was ideal and produced a great finished conversion.

Here's a Youtube of the octave mando:

I bought my Epiphone AJ10 in 2000, thought I'd get a chance to learn, but the kids were babies and toddlers at the time. Well, everyone got older, and I was able to get around the hobby 6 years ago. My son has learned and often plays and practices on the Epiphone. It will always be in the family

I had my Guild F-50 for 24 years, bought used in 1980, sold in 2004. The Froggy is creeping up on that. I will have had it for 23 years this coming February. Never was much of a flipper.

5-10 years mostly .. I eventually plan on getting a Guild D55 , I really want to buy one in person but probably will Sweetwater it . . I've owned a 1973 Guild D25ch loved it and a newer D20 . The D20 was not my thing thought it'd be a D25 but wasn't . My current guitar is a Alvarez MD65 cedar/hog. I've had it quite awhile and had played 2 Martins D35 and D28 and Larrivee D40 dreads at the store and for the money playablility and sound I went home with the Alvarez . I was pretty disappointed in the D40 by Larrivee it had the Martin type headstock but just didn't have that projection or volume at all . Anyhow my next purchase is an Alvarez MD60BG or MD60EBG which ever it'll get a k&k put in it . I'm gonna keep the MD65 too it's been great it's all beat up and has checks on the finish and a crack on the top . Love it . Maybe one day I'll splurge and get the Guild D55

Default What is the longest time you have owned a specific guitar (revised)

Takamine G330 dread purchased new in ‘95 from Moe’s Music in Virginia Beach ... first decent acoustic I ever played and I couldn’t believe the difference (I’d taken a hiatus from guitar for nearly 20 years) ...

Still have it, never see myself letting it go ... so, 25 years and counting ...
