Default Taylor GS8 vs D-16RGT

Hello all, looking for opinions on my GAS attack.

Found a nearly mint GS8 with ES. Would you sell a D-16rGT for it?

Thats a tough call. I had an HD-16 Adi that I sold to a playing partner and a GS7es that I also sold. The former has opened up nicely when I played it a few months ago. The GS7 with it's Cedar/EIR was my favorite Taylor I owned. Wish I could get it back. I can't advise you on what to do...only you can figure that out. I'll just say it before someone else does...if you could find a way to buy the Taylor without selling the Martin you'd have a whole lot of ground covered. Best of luck!

Depends on what your flavor is. I had a D16RGT a number of years ago. I now own a D-18 which I love, but still kick myself weekly for selling that 16. I was tone chasing and later realized it was one of my favorite guitars.

No criticism on either -

something to consider , i know you have each one tugging on your heart.
One you already own and have bonded with it and another your interested in -
not knowing the price or what your actual situation is -
these are my thoughts - if its not a financial stress on you and you only have this one other guitar-sometimes diversity or something different
( to pair with your existing guitar ) is not a bad idea - different sounding guitars open up creativity
-especially now with our worlds current situation -we need to have that happy place that our music puts us in .

Peace

For me the choice would be easy - GS8. I can no longer play most Martin necks for very long - something about the profile and nut width bothers my fretting hand. But I can play any Taylor for 3+ hours at a stretch. I once owned four Martins but they are all gone now. I still have several Taylors. I always wished for something that would sound like my former Martin J-40 but play like a Taylor.

To many of us fans, they had a good thing going with the acoustic series - no electronics and no cutaway and simpler bling -- but those only lasted about 3-4 years on the market. For that vintage the on-board pickup is either ES1.1 (AA batteries) or the better ES1.2 (9V). It is unlikely to be the best ES1.3 system unless it was converted at the factory. Hopefully no one had an ES2 put in there.

Llew has a point - if you can somehow get both, you will have a lot of tonal territory available

I have a GS7 as well as a Martin dread.
Definitely two different beasts, the Taylor being more balanced, like a Jumbo with less volume.
A Martin dread would have that slightly scooped midrange.

You need both!

It would be nice to have both, but the home remodel is taking all the extra funds..... I hate being an adult sometimes. Stupid responsibility’s.

Given these two options, it would be a GS8 with no hesitation.

I think it depends on whether you prefer the Martin or the Taylor tone. I have a D-16GT LTD (not the "R") and it's a great guitar but one day I'll move up to the Standard series. I don't think I'd want to move on from the GS8 though.

I've previously owned two GS8's, and a good friend and bandmate owned the D16RGT. Both great guitars. My pick (and recommendation) is the GS8 - no hesitation.

I had a GS8 years ago and I have a Martin D-16GT. I like my Martin, but I wish I had that GS8 back.

The GS8 is a class or two above imo.

I would take the GS8 in half a heartbeat.
