Default Mackie Rechargeable speakers

Tonight my wife and I were singing and playing through a Mackie mixer and a pair of the 8" Mackie rechargeable powered speakers. There was a weird popping/whirling noise coming from the speakers. I was running my Taylor 214ce through an LR Baggs Para DI running on phantom power from the mixer. Our mics were both Sennheiser e945. Good cables, but got an occasional buzz from the PADI. I wonder if low battery power would be the culprit? Once before on a different day, there was no sound at all coming out of the speakers (they were dead) the sound guy there plugged them in and they were fine. I think next time I'll bring my Stagepas 1k and a Jackery.
