I've owned (and am currently selling) a US Fender Acoustasonic. My new hybrid is the Cole Clark True Hybrid. This video does a nice comparison of the True Hybrid's electric pickups versus standard electric guitars.

I’ve had a Tele Player Acoustasonic, and I test drove the newer dreadnought that just came out. They are… ok. And I CAN see their place for the heavy scheduled working musician.
But if you are asking about best acoustic live sound? Pick a guitar you already like, and throw a nice Soundhole pickup in it, for ease. I have tried so many guitars playing our gigs… and the best sounds were the simplest. A D15 with a Baggs M1 through a Venue DI or ToneDeq. As an aside, I gigged my Martin 000 Cherry Hill with a Baggs Element VTC twice this past week, and the acoustic rock tone was dynamite.

The Martin SC series of guitars seem to be good for that purpose. I've heard several & they do a really good job plugged in. Price seems to range from$1K to $8K (WOW!) @ Sweetwater.

I went to a concert the other night that was Jake Shimabukaro and Mac McAnally. The difference in tone between the two was startling.
Certainly part of it is Jake is a genuine virtuoso and his playing. Both were clearly plugged in with a cable and no mic. Mac was playing both a steel string and a classical and both just sounded quacky and twangy compared to Jake. I did a quick lookup and it appears that Jake is a fan of the Fishman Aura stuff. |

Another idea is to plug your hybrid into a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI that contains a lot of IR images. Find the best acoustic tone and use that. The poster who said that IR is needed somewhere in the chain was accurate.

Respectfully, if I’m reading the OP correctly, he/she is not asking about an acoustic guitar that has a PU in it, but rather an electric guitar that also has a piezo pickup, in order to also get close to an acoustic guitar tone. If this is correct: Laurence Juber is these days playing a PRS model on his electric gigs that has this. I’ll find out the model for you.

Nobody is reading the original post. He's looking for a hybrid guitar. I use the PRS SE Hollowbody II for most of my gigs and it gets a very convincing acoustic tone. The electric tones are great, as you would expect from PRS. You need to run the 2 outputs to separate chains...one for acoustic and one for elctric, to get the most out of this guitar. Personally, I love it.

Yes. I am after a hybrid guitar. Thanks for the thoughts. I may go with PRS.

The experience of playing plugged in is more than just defining the sound.
Its touch sensitivity Dynamics Feedback resistan string balance How the amplification resounds to player not how the player responds to amplifier There is so much to the equation and little new to deal with the issues of the players interaction. We are doing something different. I hope you call get a chance to experience it. Goacousticaudio.com |

Cole Clark Hybrid guitars. End of discussion.
Towards the middle of last year I heard Anthony Snape playing one of these while supporting Tommy Emmanuel's Aussie tour. Sounded fantastic.
