Leach F-5 Orchid Mandolin
It has been a very long journey. At times I thought the mandolin would never make it. But it finally arrived and it's the prettiest thing I've ever seen.
Orchids, hummingbirds and butterflies by Harvey Leach. |

Absolutely beautiful. Was this done to an existing mando or is this an entirely new build?

Harvey built a beautiful instrument. He went with simple white binding and left the headstock unfinished -- which makes it a perfect match with the fingerboard and pickguard. The top is glossy "faded black" -- again to match with the unfinished ebony -- while the back is some variation of amberburst. Not exactly F-5 vintage specs but that was never the intention. Otherwise the mandolin plays perfectly. Notes ring clearly and evenly across the fingerboard. Tone is rich with enough grunt in the bass strings. Records very well despite my limited skills. I don't have any other mandolins to compare it with but from a practical standpoint I am satisfied. I will post better photos when I figure out a way to make the mando sit on its butt for the pose -- but here are a few more shots for now: |

Well now I did it. I just had to show my sister this mandolin and now she is more than willing to try her talents on a guitar. She is a mosaic artist and she gave her her two thumbs up on this instrument.

Unfortunately the butterfly on the pickguard is right by the "sweet spot" so it already has a few marks... Sigh...
My favourite inlay is the hummingbird on the headstock. If I ever become a decent mandolin player one day, it'll be thanks to the hummingbird... |

Harvey did such an incredible job with this mandolin. We were originally discussing a guitar but eventually decided that an F mandolin would be a more exciting canvas. I'm very happy and extremely thankful to be the owner of such a beautiful instrument. |

Wow, Harv! Wow! What a work of art! I've done some butterfly inlays in the past, but nothing at this level. Beautiful!

Mau, that is a breathtaking piece of art you've got there. Mr. Leach sure knows what he's doing.
