Cheap PA Systems
I've been thinking about getting a portable PA System.. I've dealt with the Fender Passport and they are pretty great but only 4 port.
I'd love to get an 8 port or more mixer. I'm just one guy, but I play out once in a while for the Church or with friends or whatever. It'd be really cool to have something setup.. I don't really want junk ether.. I've heard a Rogue mixer/pa setup and it was really terrible. Any ideas.. There are some Wierd off brands on ebay.. Anyone experience any of these?? SHS Audio?, Deura or Hollinger ? |

Some observations:
Hi,
I Just got back from visit to Sam Ash. They have a series of lower end units which U might check out - Stageworks LG4 had 4 inputs, but LG8 might have more. search the net for Stageworks and review to get more info. 2 x 12 inch speakers + horn, with separate power head. I think the larger Fender PD250 might have more than 4. Note the PD series gets much beter ratings than the PA line. Another option is to use one of the many mixers around a hundred buckss +/- or less to mix down to an amp with smaller input number. A friend suggests to get a simple but powerful amp and use a more sophisticated mixer, as you can upgrade the mixer for only a couple hundred to get more features.

How much are you looking to spend?
I think Kustom has an 8 channel powered mixer, you just have to by the speakers and stuff...but the "in thing" right now is that you could get a pair of powered speakers from Behringer or Carvin, and just find the right kind of unpowered mixer from Behringer.

I did more research.. I kind of ignored the unknown brands.
Looks like mixers and such are pretty cheap if you can find used band equipment. Looks like maybe building a system from seperate componenets may be the way to go, instead of buying a complete setup. My bro has a fender passport, I can use his speakers for a while.. So I may be able to get sweet setup afterall. Thanks for the feedback.. I'm still curious about those off-brands. I expect they are junk but you never know. |

I use the Peavy Escort (5 channels) plus a six channel mixer. The mixer was around $80. Works fine and very portable.

I use a Mackie 6-ch mixing board (has onboard DSP effects), under $150; plus a pair of Stageworks 12" 2-way powered speakers ($260 the pair). Behringer mixer might be cheaper, but I prefer Mackie's durability and light weight. You might find a used 8-or-12-ch. model just as cheaply. Only bummer with the Stageworks speakers is that they don't mount vertically on most available speaker stands (they have horizontal brackets you can attach, but even they have to be retrofitted to fit on mic stands). I just use a pair of chairs or bar stools; I'm sure someone must make platforms that slip over the top of std. speaker stands.

I've been impressed with the Carvin setups. They have just about every configuration you can think of. http://www.carvin.com/soundsystems/
