String question......
So I just bought my first Electric in 15 years. I used to play electric for years and owned Tele's but when I switched to Acoustics I never looked back. I have had the urge for the last month or so to get an electric to mess around with nd I came across as steal of a deal on a Danelectro DC59 so I picked it up. I know a lot of people don't like them but I have always been attracted to them for some reason and it has that Tele kinda sound sooooo.......
Now for the question, its been so long since I owned an electric I have no idea where to begin with strings. I know stock for Dano's are 10's but beyond that I am clueless and need suggestions.

Are you looking for recommendations for strings in that gauge or other gauges?
I usually use Gibson Vintage Reissues with my Les Paul's. LP usually come with 10s as do the 335s, etc. family. Most Fenders come with 9s. I've been using Fender or SIT Strings (9s) on my telecaster, but am going to change to 10s next string change. I think they're a little too light and want to try the 10s on the Tele. It depends on what you're looking for and what feels right to you. Try some different ones and see what you like. |

I am looking for any recommendations of any kind.
- Recommendations for the Danelectro DC59 in particular - Recommendations for 10 guage strings in general - Recommendations for String brands in general - Anything would be great..... I am going in blind since I have not bought a pack of electric strings in 15 years.

http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/...l-strings/8326 I prefer pure nickel strings for their mellower vintage tone. GHS Big Core Nickel Rockers, Gibson Vintage Reissue, SIT Power Groove are all excellent strings and they are virtually interchangeable to me. Pyramid and Thomastik-Infeld make a selection of wonderful and wonderfully expensive nickel strings. Others rave about DR Pure Blues, but I have no direct experience. I have four electrics and I now have different pure nickel strings on each one. I use 10' on my hollow and semi hollow guitars. Pyramid Gold on my Epiphone Casino, GHS Big Core on my Gibson CS-336, Thomastik-Infeld Swing series flat-wound on my Epiphone Granada. I have Gibson Les Paul Signature strings on my Les Paul Special. |

After having incredible success with the Elixir strings on my Taylor T-5, I now have them on my Gibson ES-345 as well! I use 11's w/ an unwound 3rd string on both guitars; the 11's give the strings just a little more 'beef" to the tone and I can still bend them when I want... Elixirs last for SO LONG that it's difficult for me to recommend anything else, especially if playing that electric is NOT your main axe, as the Elixirs stay good-sounding for months at a time...
True story: My Taylor T-5 has had the SAME STRINGS on it since a couple months after I got it in 2006! I sent it back to the factory and they switched out the neck pickup (which means they swapped out the whole neck!), and I'm pretty sure they changed the strings then... and they still sound very good and play/intonate properly! It's unbelievable to me... and I am known for being fussy about my strings and the way my guitars sound! Have fun with that new Dano! I love those guitars, although I'm not familiar with your model, they really are wonderful little instruments!

I use 9-42's on my Strats and 10-46's on my Gibsons. D'Addario also makes a 9.5-44 set which is nice on PRS's.
I use D'Addario's because I think they bend easier than other brands. I'm also prone to buy whatever is cheapest since most electric strings are similar. |

I tend to use D'Addario or Ernie Ball on my electrics that I play on occasion. Elixers for the ones I play a lot. I've been tempted to switch over to Elixers for simplicity's sake.

As usual, strings are a personal choice, so I'm not going to waste time recommending one brand over another. Basically, the argument about string gauges on electrics is similar to the argument regarding string gauges on acoustics. While a heavier gauge string on an acoustic will drive your top more, producing more volume, a heavier gauge string will produce more flux in the pickup's magnetic field on your electric, resulting in a stronger, beefier signal going to the amp. As always, what feels comfortable in your hands is always a major consideration. Experiment and see what works best for you. There's really no other way.

I'll ditto Dave on the idea of the wound G, but FYI D'A also makes a 10-46 set like this (EXL110W) - and IMO I'd try to keep it as light as possible on a Dano in the interest of longevity...

First congrats on your Dano! To me, there is something that is so cool about Danelectro's. I was in the same situation as you, coming off playing strictly acoustic. I noticed that I would bend strings out of tune because I was used to playing stiffer acoustic .012 light gauge.
I put .011 nickel strings on my electrics and they still feel way lighter than .012bronze strings. You may have to adjust the truss rod, I did when I put .011s on my Dano. I happen to like the slightly warmer nickel strings over the nickel plated. Lots of luck with your new Dano. |
