Default Martin D16RGT tuner swap question

Just bought a mint Martin D16RGT and was wondering if tuners from a HD28 would fit on the D16RGT?

Don’t like the way the small tuner buttons feel.

I assume the D16RGT has the Martin small chrome enclosed gear tuners. What kind of tuners are on the HD28?

They’re just the stock gold enclosed tuners... which I’m assuming is Rotomatics.

Just curious, as I know nothing about Martin tuners...are you just unhappy with the button size? Because some tuner brands that I am familiar with (Gotoh, Schaller) sell button sets of various sizes and materials that fit their tuners, so if the button size/material was the source of unhappiness, one wouldn't have to change the entire tuner.

Or are you after a better overall tuner? I'm doing that right now on my Lakewood, I have some Gotoh 510 21:1 ratio coming in to replace the Schaller M6s which are probably around 14:1 or 16:1 ratio. I have the Gotohs on my Taylor and love the higher gear ratio and the precision it adds to tuning, hence the swap.

If you're going to do a swap, you'd need to take some base measurements. First: confirm the mounting screw angle to the tuning post (90, 135 or 180 degree). If they don't match, you will have to drill new holes and fill in the old ones. If they do match, I'd also confirm measuring the distance from the center of the tuning post to the mounting screw (M6 and 510 were both 135 degree, 11mm). And then confirm they both require the same size hole in the headstock (again both were 10mm). Once you know those all line up, it should be a straightforward swap. My tuners come in on Friday, but I still have relatively new strings on my Lakewood so I may wait a couple of weeks before replacing them. I'll update my thread on this subforum when I do it.

If they're Rotomatics, they should be a drop-in replacement for the Martin tuners. If the screw holes line up properly, you should be able to install them without drilling any new holes in the headstock. I did this once with a Martin MMV that I used to own. I replaced the stock tuners on the MMV, which are the gold version of the tuners on your D16RGT, with Rotomatics and the screw holes were a perfect fit.
