Default What makes some guitars resistant to humidity changes?

Overnight the humidity in my house went from 65% to 41%. Most of my guitars needed to be retuned except for my Martin OM-28 which is still perfectly in tune. What accounts for that?

I've observed such things for decades and have discovered no rhyme or reason it it. But I haven't studied it either.

Paul: Is the OM-28 either the oldest or newest guitar in your collection???

I’ve had the same experiences as the OP. The thing I’ve read here and elsewhere is that older guitars tend to resist humidity changes more than newer ones - I haven’t verified this myself, but I’ve seen it documented in several credible sources. Is your OM-28 older than the others?

...over the years I have owned some guitars that are just less sensitive to rh changes and always seem to hold their tuning....I can’t say that I’ve noticed any common characteristics that account for it....

For me, my Kramer Prairie Grass gets a hair buzzy when the RH in my home drops below 40% where my Wingert guitars drop into their sweetest tone there. I happen to know that the Kramer was built at 45% RH while Kathy builds her guitars at 38% RH. So, it seems that the RH that the guitar was built at might be one factor at play and I am sure there are other factors as well. The Kramer seems to absolutely shine between 45-50%. Of course, these guitars sound wonderful most of the time but I would say that my Kramer, which is a bit more lightly built than my Wingerts is more sensitive to lower humidity. It is mahogany, the others rosewood. No idea if that matters though.

Best,
Jayne

Oh my. you need to retune your guitars after overnight?
I never heard of such a thing.
I had the guy a Guitar Center tune mine before I bought it.
It should never need tuning again.
Tune your guitar.
Sorry but I have a pet peeve about out of tune guitars.
And if it hasn't been tuned in 24 hours. It's out of tune.
