Traded off Forum - Marklund OM28 Alpine/Madagascar
Custom Marklund OM28
Specs: -Alpine Spruce (Berkmann spruce) -Madagascar back & sides -37 style 000 neck shape (Measurements taken from ‘37 000-18) >Nice full neck, beautifully carved -bar frets/ebony rod -hide glue used throughout -1 3/4 nut & 2 3/8 saddle -ebony board & bridge -Canadian TKL style case This is a wonderful OM style. Number 009 from Per Marklund.. Amazing punch with lots of clarity. It’s not in perfect condition. The pickguard did shrink for the previous owner but we have all left it alone and kept it original.. It could be easily replaced by any good luthier/repair person.. I will try to get some more detailed pics up soon. Hi Joseph P,
I am not sure why your ad is calling this an 000-28 long scale. Using 000 or 28 nomenclature is "Martin". 000-28s were made from 1926 to 1929 and all were 25.4" nominal and all were 12 frets. From 1929-1933 Martin switched to 14 fret necks with a name of "Orchestra Model" and all had the usual 25.4" scale. In 1934 Martin switched the name to 000-28. Those were long scale made from January 1934 to about May 1934 and 24.9" after May. This of course is Matthew's original custom order OM-28 but with a neck carve similar to his old 000-18A - maybe that's where you are getting the 000 designation from. But there were NO differences in those early 1934 000-18/28 long scale instruments to the previous 1933 models that were stamped OMs. Most "Martin" guys opening an ad for a 000-28 long scale are looking for a 12 fretter. There are a lot fewer of those than buyers looking for an OM. This is all Martin nerdy stuff that you probably know, but you'll get way more results, hits and traffic from members labeling this as a Custom luthier built Madagascar OM-28. Best of luck and a free "nomenclature" bump to the top! |

Actually, the 000-28 designation is accurate as well. I'm not trying to be contentious, just FYI. In Martin history, the OM is just a version, or hybrid, of the 000. And to this very day, on all custom OMs, if you look at the spec sheet one of the first lines will read: "Body; 000." In the end, it's just splitting hairs, it's only a name. And since this is not a Martin, I would call it whatever the builder said it was. The creator has the final say.
Steve

The OM28 was not just a 14 fret standard scale but had skinny "rhythm" style neck (Perry Bechtel and all that) and it was introduced to compete with the Gibson archtops in .... orchestras, but it didn't cut the mustard and, as you correctly say it was discontinued in '34 when the 14 fret dreadnought was introduced as a larger "OM" - which wasn't a success in orchestras but did catch on with the country and folk sector. The revival of the OM28 is another., more modern piece of history, which, IIRC involves Eric Shoenberg and Dan Bourgeois in the late '70s - '80s. The Marklund OM offered here is a version of a guitar meant to be a rhythm instrument that was reborn as a much loved fingerstyle player's "weapon of choice"
