I think similar results can be achieved with the BBE Acoustimax preamp.
Other pedals to consider are LR Baggs Session DI which features saturation and compression and Zoom multi-effect pedals which can emulate many well-known effects such as BBE Sonic Maximizer or Aphex Punch Factory compressor.

I have three green one's and a red one. I may finally stop using it because of the HX Stomp. I need to try it with and without though.
