Ribbon mics can be quite noisy. Typically, the self-noise specification is not listed for passive ribbon mics (it is more often listed for active ribbon mics). In either case, it tends to be high. Add to this that most folks do not have preamps which have low self noise at high gain (high gain is need for passive ribbon mics). Add again that many ribbon mics exhibit simply too much proximity effect when placed close to an acoustic guitar, so they work best when further away for the guitar which requires more gain.
It takes a quality ribbon mic (passive or active), coupled with a quality preamp, placed appropriately, with some judicious post tracking tweaks to maximize results, which can be glorious. |
