Only if you're playing lap style.
All of my Nationals are easily playable in standard tuning all the way up the neck with 12s. I string them with 13s for open D and G tunings, but that Style O stays in standard with 12s. The action on all of them is no higher than any other acoustic guitar. |

Well, for squarenecks you sure do! I don't do bottleneck, so I'm not the one to answer for that.

Depends on what you are doing with it. You can have a pretty low setup on a roundneck if you are going to just fingerpick it. You will probably want a little more clearance if you are playing hybrid slide, and I usually use a heavier high E. If I plan to keep it in open tunings I usually use mediums instead of lights. Lap Steels usually have heavier stings, but you are not fretting them and want support for the steel.

I was wondering if anyone would notice that.
Had a batch of, uh, D'Adderios I think that it was, that kept popping the ball off of the D string. I'd be sitting around and hear "boing..." |

My pictures are from National Reso-Phonic's website, but my National RM-1 mandolin looks just like this:
I've also got a National M-2 guitar like this one: The M-2 doesn't get used as much, but the mandolin gets played constantly, as it's now my main stage mandolin. It's been refretted once already, and earlier this month I had my repairman put a new biscuit & bridge saddle on it. Those parts can and do wear out. Wade Hampton Miller |
