I won't try to speak for Mc1, but speaking for myself, when someone as musically influential as Tony Rice is an outspoken fan of tortoiseshell picks, it generates interest and demand for them from players who admire him. This helps sustain a black market for genuine tortoiseshell picks, and I don't we can safely assume that all of the tortoises whose carapaces get used for this are long dead.

Actions have consequences, and in this case the consequences are continued pressures on some severely endangered animals.

_I'm looking to buy a good T Rice CD, what's a good one, well, exceptional,
he sounds good on the Unit CDs, and some of the ones with him and 1 or 2 other guys.

Manzanita, pizza tapes, david grisman quintet, tone poems, and the david grisman rounder album are the ones I have.

I love all of them, couldn't pick a favorite. He does most of the vocals in the rounder album and manzanita. But I think you really get to hear him have fun with his guitar on the pizza tapes. He absolutely kills "Shady Grove"

I also have a SACD of Garcia and Grisman from the acoustic disc. Just ordered Pizza Tapes.

Oh yea thats reason enough to get the album right there.

In fact that is why i first got the album, when i bought it, i hadnt heard of Tony Rice or David Grisman. I just thought it was going to be like an acoustic dead album.

But it was alot more than that for me, the pizza tapes is a really important album for me, it took me in the direction that im going in now. Got me into bluegrass (even though its not a bluegrass album at all), and promptly after hearing it i bought a mandolin . Ive been playing mandolin more than guitar since then really, and im enjoying it, especially since i got my weber yellowstone.

Any of the Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen CDs are excellent!

Tony Rice, Larry Rice, Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen
"Out of the Woodwork"
"Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen"
"Running Wild"

Rice developed his tastes and skills over time, from traditional bluegrass to new grass, to folk, to space grass, to acoustic jazz...

If your looking for him "singing bluegrass songs," these albums in particulat will fit the bill, and there are many others:

That looks very similar to the Greven pick guard on my HD 28 V (Sorry no pics handy).

Isn't that case a little too roomy for that guitar ?

Nice socks tho'

Thanks for all the responses. I had a hunch that Rice's pickguard was tortoiseshell. I'll keep on the lookout for a (legal lol) replacement guard that's nice (gonna look into the suggestions you guys gave).

Oh and I enjoyed all the talk about Rice's albums. Checking those out. I always learn something on here.

Yes, I know this a thread from five years ago, but it came up when I searched for "Tony Rice tortoise shell pickguard." Reason being that I just saw a replica of that pickguard advertised on Banjo Ben's online store. I don't usually care for pickguards, but in this case, the ad piqued my interest because it read, "Who doesn't want to be more like Tony?!" So I read this thread, and my reaction is, actually no, I don't want to be more like Tony if that means I'm endowing my guitar with a piece that is modeled directly after one sourced from a critically endangered species.

And I'm quoting Wade's old post because I find it to be a great reminder of these underlying connections and how we think about and perceive the gear we use.
