Default Shells and dehumidifying?

I have just come across a bag of shells and slivers of wood in a net bag within a 1950s acoustic guitar case. Just trying to work out their purpose- dehumidifying, fragrance, lucky charm ???

Any ideas guys?

Were there chicken feet? If so I'd get rid of the guitar - quickly.

Shaker/rattle bag? Perhaps the shells alone were too bright and the slivers of wood dampened the sound a bit.
