Just recording one guitar? A simple portable digital recorder is never a bad choice for simple requirements. Once you have the data in a file, any number of digital audio workstations accept the data for further processing.

More performers to record might suggest a more complex equipment list. But learning your basics with, say, a Tascam DR-05 will go a long way.

I use AKG C414 microphones into a Behringer UB1002 mixer into a Tascam DR-07 recorder. Then I dump the SD card to my computer and use Nero to edit and add reverb.

For recording lessons or practice I'll use my Zoom H4 and its internal microphones, and playback from the H4 to either headphones or powered monitors.

For better recordings I use 2 mics in a spaced pair setup. I have an Oktava mc-012 and a Cascade Fathead ribbon. I use an Event EMP-1 preamp and/or a M-Audio DMP3 dual preamp. I record on the Zoom H4, move it to the computer, and adjust levels, panning, EQ, etc using Audacity.

A set up similar to Chuck S.

Spaced pair of mics.....Shure KSM137 and MXL 604.....to a Rane DMS22 dual preamp......to a Zoom H4n. Files then moved to computer with work in Audacity. Reverb added through Anwida Soft Light.
Hoping to do a little in Reaper this winter

I have an Alesis Multi Mix 8 FX USB mixer that's connected to my computer via a usb port. My computer has Audacity and Fruity loops on it. My mixer runs two mics direct and a guitar that's routed through a pedal board that has a PADI, Chorus pedal, blues driver and looper. I also have a Power Book Pro with Garage band that can connect to the mixer via the usb port.

Default what do you use to record

Sometimes I acquire gear for "future" use...so I usually end up with a bunch of stuff I don't use much if at all...but I have an MXL V63M Stereo condenser mic that has been hanging around, and a Tascam DR-100mkII that hasn't seen it's share of use....so I had the idea or pairing these together to record solo guitar and vocal, to help with practice and learning and improving performance....the Tascam has 2 XLR inputs, and phantom power...so I placed the MXL on a stand, plugged it's 2 output cables into the Tascam, found a good postion for the mic, adjusted the record levels....I'm really pleased with the results...the Tascam is battery powered, and the only wires were from the mic, and my headphones....I wish I had discovered this sooner...just a sweet , simple setup...I justed happened to be doing a playback when I came across this thread....

I used a Boss BR600 for my first album, switching over to computer right at the end of production. Using a DAW offers so much more. I don't regret the long hours of mixdowns 'riding the faders' either!

Does the preamp add any benefit since you already have the Zoom H4 preamps? Are you going through two sets of preamps thereby?
