Also it's worth considering including in your hunt, guitars you might otherwise like that sell for more than $1000 new but that you can pick up for that or less, used.

I'm always surprised by Seagull S6 recommendations. For a bit more money you could get an LL16 or FS3, both of which are far superior imo. I had a used S6 recently for a bit and found it to be very average sounding.. nothing special about it at all.

My LL16 sounds unreal in comparison. Night and day.

Eastmans under $1k are also great, although I don't like the rough open pore necks.

You could also just go to an actual guitar store and try a bunch of guitars and try to find something that surprises you.

I'm a fan of Martin tone, so it's not surprising that I recommend the all solid-wood Martin Special D Classic which is a model made exclusively for Musician's Friend and Guitar Center. Although the list price is just above the $1K mark, you can often find it on sale for under $1K new.

If Martin isn't your thing, I also like the Seagull S6 Original. The solid cedar top with laminated cherry back and sides is a nice combo for tone.

I recently played an Alvarez MD60EBG which retails for $960 (or $800 without electronics). I'd say it sounds like 95% of a Guild D-40 for a third the price. I also really liked the Guild F-250E a lot as well. Some Eastman's are also really good, but they tend to vary a lot guitar to guitar, even in the same model. Some have sharp fret edges and other flaws and some just don't sound good where other guitars of the exact same model do.

If you want a really loud guitar, look at the Seagull S6. I didn't think they were the best under $1k by any means, although not bad.

Depends on too many factors to give a single recommendation. What do you like? How do you play? Any nut width preference? Neck shape preference? What tone are you looking for? Are you open to buying a pre-owned guitar?

My stock response to most guitar recommendations is to look at Alvarez-Yairi pre-owned guitars. To me, they are some of the best values out there (which is why I own 4 of them)...

My recommendation would be a Seagull S6. Canadian made using local sustainable wild cherry bodies and cedar tops. I play both finger style and rhythm with a pick. I actually blame the guitar for making me sound ok. I also use free picks I get from the store where I buy my strings
Speaking for myself, I left that price range a long time ago, so I rarely play sub $1000 guitars in a store. I have played enough to know how good they can be, but not enough to comment. I think there are plenty of us out there. I don't play much of anything in a store anymore. I've hit my cost ceiling.

I change price ranges all the time.

I think these are three fantastic guitars:

Martin SC-10e Sapele
Taylor 110e
Taylor 112-ce

I’ve owned all…. They are inexpensive. But Taylor quality still oozes out the two above, and the Martin is a nice surprise. I didn’t think I’d like it, but there ya go.

I think they are made in Mexico… which for me is a bonus for a few reasons.
