My first "NEW" guitar
After buying nothing but 2nd hand guitars since I started playing guitars, I finally went to my local guitar shop and picked up my first NEW, first owned by me first guitar. I've been eyeballing the guitar for the past month and I finally pulled the trigger. Even though I just started playing a year and a half ago, I think this guitar is more the enough to satisfy my GAS for 2009. (I hope, or maybe I hope not.) I like to welcome you guys to my new Martin DX-1. She smells really good. My other guitars do not come close to the scent she puts out. Wednesday is my off work day and guess what I'll be doing.
Couple of questions for you guys. What's the best way to maintain the guitar and also do I need some kind of humidifying system on any of the guitars. Thanks all, I love this forum.

CONGRATS! That looks like a sturdy guitar and flawless too BTW (not always a guarantee with new guitars).
As far as should you humidify, the answer is = YES, always unless too much humidity is a problem in your area. In which case a de-humidifer is what you need. Especially if the guitar is brand new, chances are it's been sitting in the storage room where it gets pretty dry. I'd start asap with a clean sponge and some ziploc. A member here made a great Youtube video on how to make a cheap one at home. Happy strumming!

Congrats on a sweet looking axe.
The DX-1's I've strummed sounded great, too. (Don't remember smelling any. I'll put that on my "to do" list.) Make every effort to care for it in terms of temp/humidity. I damaged a very nice guitar by exposing it to temp/humidity extremes. I've solved that problem by no longer having any very nice guitars Just out of curiosity, what makes and models of used guitars do/did you have? What did you like/dislike about them? |

ENerd,
Congratulations on your DX-1 and welcome to the Martin family! Do humidify if necessary. Enjoy your Martin, it won't be you last.......they grow on you!

Welcome to your new addiction.... Martin.
I bought my first Martin in February. Hadn't planned on it, but I bought my second Martin in March. That's how it goes. Hang on to your wallet, it's gonna be a shaky ride. And enjoy your new Martin!

I know what you mean about smelling guitars.
A Lowden F25C I had smelled wonderful ! the Yamaha LL16 also smells OK (well, it seems to be a bit less "sweet" smelling). Plays great though ! Happy new Martin |

Great new guitar. I have had my DX1 for 2 years now (just put in an undersaddle pickup) and have loved playing it. Great tone and very easy to play (nothing but light strings). After 2 years though I have had the longing for an all wood Martin and have ordered a D16GT which I hope to have very soon. Keeping the DX1 though as my go anywhere axe.

Very nice choice.
As for maintaining it, check the Martin web site and read the Care and Feeding guide for good tips. Also, look through Frank Ford's wonderful collection of guitar how-to's at Fret.com, including how to clean the body and finger board. Also, you should humidify it in its case until the RH in the room is consistently above 40 percent. Enjoy! |
