Excuse me if I missed this, but how did you land on the headstock image?

Paul - that could be a touchy subject. Let’s just say I really liked a certain piece of computer software back in the 80’s. And the guitar is for personal use only… it will not be going into production

Rick

PS - The logo was my choice, not Dale’s

Default Details that Drive a Luthier Crazy

The devil is in the details. The armrest drove Dale crazy. He was really annoyed at the way it looked and spent many hours trying to figure out a fix.

Before:

Here's what he worked out:

Would you or I have been bothered by this detail? Probably not. And likely, a little tint could have hidden the flaw. But the guitar is a projection of a luthier's soul and this luthier had to get it 'just right'.

Yup… that’s the one. As I said, “done at my request and for personal use only.” I always admired the logo when I used the program (way back when) and thought it was the perfect piece of artwork to pay homage to my late friend Larry Fox.

Congratulations Fred and Rick! It's twins! Not identical, however.

Before we can release them to your care, they need to be sprayed and buffed, then set-up. Just be patient, labor and delivery always takes a little longer than you expect.

best,

Dr. Fairbanks

As the build is wrapping up, my phone has been pinging off with messages from Dale and accompanying photos. Each time it pings, my wife asks, “Is it done yet?”

“No, that was a picture of the bridge:”

“No, that was a picture to show me how the pickguard will look:”

“No, that’s a picture showing the guitar masked off for spraying:”

My point here, besides showing all of the eye candy, is to reiterate how many steps are involved in building a guitar and the number of hours required to attend to every little detail. It’s an impressive accomplishment for sure. With a little luck, tomorrow will be “Spray Day!”

Adding to the suspense is that our phone system makes a verbal announcement throughout the house: “Text message from Fairbanks Dale.”

Awesome Rick!!! Looks like the twins will be split up for the time being as I do not think mine is quite ready for the spray booth. Hopefully, they will spend more quality time together next week.

Default Sealer Coat is On!

Wowza!This vintage wood “looks” vintage!!

quote from Dale Fairbanks:
Got the first sealer coat on the mahogany. They don’t grow trees like this anymore. No color.
