Default My old 1980s Ovation… out of the blue.

When I left college in the late 80s I did so with a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to get out of Binghamton quickly, and wipe it away… yeah maybe a girl was involved.

And maybe today she is still my wife…

Anywho, I stopped at a music store the day before I left, traded in my Strat and Peavey amp in the worst trade ever… and went home with an Ovation acoustic I knew nothing about. This guitar sat at my parents house in a closet, completely forgotten about, and I brought it home this weekend. The saddle is low, but the action perfect, and there is a ton of finish cracks everywhere. The bridge may be starting to lift, but it is playable, and it has a passive pickup that still works well!

The neck is thin and comfortable, and I think I am actually going to pay to fix the bridge. Pretty cool!

As an Ovation enthusiast, it warms my heart to see a player wanting to refurbish an ax from The Mothership--Long May She Run!

So, you're a SUNY Guy, Too, ay ...

Default 1982 Collector Series

I had the 1982 Blue Sunburst Collector’s Series Ovation. That was the first year.
I had it for a number of years and then sold it to a friend. I wish I still had it… Not worth a lot of money but it sure sounded great. Ovation was Glen Campbell’s acoustic of choice….and that says a lot to me.
My first guitar was a Gibson J-55…..traded in on a Guild 12 string Sunburst…then the ‘82 Ovation….and now a Martin OM-42

I see an Ovation like that and I think back to Cat Stevens in the '70s, great memories of him and that time period. Cool story, get it fixed up and keep it.

Yep. Get it fixed, dude. I am thinking that there may be two bolts beneath those pearl dots at the bottom of your bridge.

Great story. Love on this guitar Sal. And more importantly, glad you managed to keep your girl. A simple repair of the bridge is in order and play her. Part of your history...

I bought the cheap version - an Applause - in 1979. It had a deep bowl and sunburst finish. Kept it for years but sold it just a couple years back. It always was (is) a mediocre guitar and (almost) the worst guitar I’ve ever owned. Glad you’ve reconnected with yours, tho.
