Richie Kaye's video series on Singing and Playing as a Solo -- Episode 1
Hello, fellow performers, fans and students!
I've launched a video series for the solo singing guitarist, both professional and hobbyist, who'd like to know how another soloist goes about his work in rehearsal. The series takes the viewer through the determinations I make for each song I include in my repetoire. I'll cover topics such as choice of key, feel, meaning, vocal delivery, rehearsal and more. Thanks for taking the time to post these lessons. You are quite talented your lessons great.
My question is how long does it take for you to add a song to your repitoire and it is performance ready? Anyone can learn a song and after 5 run throughs can sit/play it out with a music stand. On average how many times do you have to play a song before it is gig ready? |

Thank you bbigsby!
Pleasure to meet you. After all these years, I'm up and running with a song quickly, often times, able to play it with the recording as I'm hearing it for the first time. But it's taken me years of pulling songs off records to do this. A lot of ear training and connecting the fretboard with the ear.
Classic country is much quicker than jazz standards, but with fake books, any player who's gigging jazz standards has to be able to play from the chart without ever having seen it before. That, too, can be learned. Memorization takes a bit more time. And if I want to do a different kind of arrangement, then I've got to go through this method I've learned to apply, which is the subject of my videos. |
