D LaPlante 00 build

I am having a 00 built by David LaPlante and with his permission thought I would post some pics along the way. It’ll be in the New Yorker style with lighter bracing and wider nut and saddle spacing. Brazilian faceplate, fingerboard, bridge, back and sides. Here’s the woods as he gets started. Most of his parts are from the era, pre 1967 neck and fretboard, period correct Brazilian belly bridge, binding, bracing material. Unsure of the tonewoods other than, and not being one to lavish superlatives (!), him stating it’s a “very,very high quality Sitka top.”. More pics throughout.

I am trading the only guitar I ever bought back to him for this build.
He built it for himself and kept for several years. It’s a 000-28 NY, of which only 3 or 4 were ever built by Martin. A couple pics of it.

Also a couple of the 00 build.

He’s using lots of old stash Martin wood and parts.
Pre 1965 neck blank and Brazilian fretboard, bracing stock,
Brazilian belly bridge, not sure with the tonewoods.

This looks very interesting to me, as I am slowly in the process of going from that 000-28NY to a home-built 00-35 hybrid (12 fret body, 14 fret neck, 1 3/4" nut, brw, Adirondak).

Beautiful woods and work in the pictures.

That is a great NY. I'd speculate that it's better than anything Martin ever built. I've not played a better-sounding or better-built guitar, but my shoulder, back, age, and the arthritis in my hands are demanding a slightly smaller guitar these days.

Hi, I'm something of a Martin fan too, (got most of the books about them, and I know that when he moved to the US CF 1 first established the business in New York, moving to PA five years later.

but .... I am also confused by the term "NY" style.

I believe that the 00 design Grand Concert (and the "0" concert) from 1898, with the 000 Auditorium following in 1902.

So.. NY ???


Oh, and the new guitar looks great BTW! (my favourite body and neck design!)
