Default String/guitars demo/comparison

Recorded with a Zoom H5 pointed at a point about 1" below the sound hole. (headphone wearers watch your volume)

Larrivee OM-05, with 1 day old Pierre Bensusan DADGAD Wyres strings
(13 17 22 32 42 56):

And

Avalon L2-320C, with 2 week old D'Addario XT strings
(13 17 26 35 45 56):

I can barely hear a difference. I like them both. I think the XT strings, with the heavier mid strings sound a bit mellower, but they are on a bigger guitar as well. I like the XT strings as they sound now more than the 1st week I had them on. In a week or so the Pierre Bensusan strings will mellow a touch as well.

I'm playing the 1st page of Hana by Masaaki Kishibe, but with a capo on three. Here's the notation/tab

Thanks for doing this comparison TBman. Always fun to hear comparisons. Wonderful playing!
I have not used either string. I do hear an obvious difference between those two recordings. . Problem is of course as to how much is from different guitars-bodies-bracing.
But just from these recordings, the Pierre Bensusan DADGAD Wyres have a more open airy sound. Which suits this nice fingerstyle piece to my liking and preference. I have a feeling that the XT's might excel in a heavy strumming mode.

These are fun to do. I like the idea of doing recordings of strings and making some notes about them. I might do similar recordings of my other guitars when I do string changes and then a week or two later.

Larivee with DADGAD strings sounded much better for that song IMO.

I also like the Pierre Bensusan DADGAD Wyres strings, but both sound wonderful.

It would be interesting to hear the same thing with the strings switched (come on, you've got nothing better to do).

Barry, wonderfully played, as always! I thought both sounded great, but I preferred the Larrivee. That may have more to do with the guitar itself than the strings, as that’s my current favorite configuration and maker! But both sound terrific!

Also, thanks for sharing the tab! Looking forward to giving that one a try!

I'm leaning towards the tone of the Pierre Bensusan DADGAD strings too. I should start buying the 5 pack.

I need to give those a whirl. They're pricey, but dang they sound nice on your Larrivee.

I'm going to do that in about 6 weeks.
