The kickoff is simultaneously the most dangerous play in football and also the least likely to impact the game positively or negatively. You could simply abolish the kickoff and let the receiving team start on the 20 (or 25). The problem with this is that it would eliminate the onside kick. If you moved the kickoff to the 50 yard line it would make a touchback almost automatic and also make onside kicks more appealing. IMO, that is win/win, although this would make the onside kick almost as appealing as a regular kickoff; the difference in yardage would only be about 20 yards (assuming that a touchback awards possession at the 20 yard line).

Posternutbag, I like your 50 yard line kickoff better than my return to the 40, basically for the same reason but more likely to elicit the desired result.

Hope the Comish is reading this forum - he seems to need some guidance!

Running back a kickoff for a TD is the most exciting play on football.

No, I think you are thinking of punt returns. If you track the path taken by kickoff return TDs, the vast majority are one cut towards the sideline, followed by a foot race down the sideline. Punt returns are much more interesting.

Matter of context.

I guess pro sports in general is passing me by. I gave up baseball completely after their last strike, and the NFL is about to fall to the same status with me. Its current version with instant replay and all of its delays had caused me to lose interest. I've gone from rabid fan who couldn't get enough to watching the equivalent of a single game all year.
