Below is my slightly out of focus "portable" recording studio set up in my basement. It's all battery operated. I needed something that would store compactly since I only have a small walk in closet to store my guitar stuff in. When the XLR mics and mic stands are put away, I use the Apogee MiC pictured clamped to the sheet music holder to make practice recordings. I'm a total noob with this and the recordings in the link below are my first attempts with this set up. The playing isn't perfect and the recordings are raw, but overall I think it's a great start. Thanks to all the folks that contribute to this forum.
What's your studio/recording space like? Basement, in need of a remodel. What are your goals for recording your acoustic music? For my personal listening, share with family and for posterity What kind of music do you like to play/record? Fingerstyle, mostly Celtic and American Folk, but open to almost anything if it sounds good to me. Is your studio space treated? How? Nope. At least not yet. What's in your mic locker? 2 ADK A6's, Apogee MiC, Zoom H4n Computer-based or standalone recorder? iPad, and Mac Mini Recorder? DAW? Interface? Preamp? FX? Plug-in's? Ext. HD's for storage? Garageband, Art USB Dual Pre (thanks Larry J), iCloud Monitors? Headphones? Power amp? Controller/mixer or completely ITB? Sennheiser HD525 headphones Cables? Mic stands? etc. Whatever you use. Just what's pictured. Favorite mic pattern/placement for recording acoustic guitar? Haven't experimented with this yet. I think what I have pictured is a spaced pair. New gear you have your eye on? None at this time. How has home recording evolved for you? iPhone>Zoom H1>Zoom H4n>Apogee MiC>iPad with preamp and dual XLR mics My recordings with this set up as pictured

This is exactly the kind of setup I'm shooting for. I'm using Reaper on Windows, and I'm currently writing a tablet based remote control for it so I don't have to constantly go to the PC to start/stop etc.. So, HP Slate 500 running custom software to control Reaper, I'll either make a custom mount for it like you appear to have for yours, or simply lay it on another music stand. What I'm researching now are acoustic and vocal mics. I have a Pod XT Live acting as a preamp as well as an external sound processor for Reaper. Seems to do the job quite nicely, and you can't beat 0 latency when recording. I guess the big ticket item will be the monitor speakers.

Musketball, sounds like your set up is coming along nicely. Interesting idea with the remote control. If you decide to mount it, check out RAM mounts. They're what I used to mount the music stand and iPad to my Hercules stand. They have universal tablet mounts too. Rock solid high quality stuff and you can mix and match to suit your needs. I used GPS City when ordering my stuff.

I'm not going to list all my gear. But lately, it's all running into Auria for iPad w/an an Alesis ioDoc as my audio interface.
The iPad has changed everything for my recording. And Auria is my favorite DAW ever. It's back to old school recording. When I buy a new iPad, I'll get the Focusrite iTrack for it because Alesis & my iPad 2 still use the 30 pin connector.

Before I answer from my own part, let me say I'm really impressed by of the setups that others have shared. Some are taking this very seriously and I'm sure are providing stupendous results. A big thumbs up!
I'd better explain that much of what I write below refers to the studio I did have, but still might be of interest. I don't have a recording space worthy of its name since I moved house. I successfully recorded 3 CDs of my stuff, and 1 for a fiddle / guitar duet, before the studio was decommissioned. I still have gear, but the room has gone. What's your studio/recording space like? No longer extant. What are your goals for recording your acoustic music? My goals were to record and mix songs for CD. Mastering was by third party. What kind of music do you like to play/record? My own compositions. Is your studio space treated? How? Yes; acoustic treatment in the form of 60kg/m3 density mineral wool slabs cut into triangles and piles in each corner of the room for absorbtion purposes. What's in your mic locker? 2 x Neumann KM-184 and 1 x Audio Technica 4043 Computer-based or standalone recorder? PC based Recorder? DAW? Interface? Preamp? FX? Plug-in's? Ext. HD's for storage? Monitors? Headphones? Power amp? Controller/mixer or completely ITB? Cables? Mic stands? etc. Whatever you use. DAW is a desktop PC (self-assembled). Program used was Cubase versions 4.0 and 5.0. Audio interface was RME Multiface. No external gear. Plugins were firstly Voxengo and later UAD. Completely in the box. Cables were stock. Mic stands Bayer-Dynamic. Phones Sennheiser. Monitoring JBL speakers with Cyrus amp. Wavelab used for audio hygeine edits. Melodyne for some vocal pitching issues. Favorite mic pattern/placement for recording acoustic guitar? X/Y pointing to neck / body joint; 8 - 12 inches. New gear you have your eye on? None How has home recording evolved for you? It evolved from tape with outboard console and gear to ITB very quickly. |

ipad/older duet
I keep seeing people using ipads to record via garageband. I have an OLDER apogee duet. Can that be made to work with an ipad or do you need the latest duet that I know is specifically designed to do that? Thanks
