Anyone into slot cars?

At 73 yrs of age, I was before the slot car craze. My passion has been collecting and operating old Lionel electric trains.

Yep, in the 60's. I had an HO set with a Ford GT and a 1/24 scale set with Ford GT and a La Cucaracha. There was a local track that must have been 10 to 12 lanes wide and my Mom would take me over to race there.

I had a Cox controller (I think) and it was always a blast on that big track that I'm guessing was 20' to 25' from the apex of one curve to the apex of the other end and about 12' at the widest point, though I don't truly know or even remember the actual shape. I just know it seemed huge and was fun!

Yes I was, back in the '60s. I had the Ford GT, except the colors were reversed on mine. Cox controller too.

I also had a Cox Ford GT. Used to race it at a place on St. George Ave. in Linden, NJ.

Scalextric was the brand of choice in England in the 60s when I was a kid. Still going strong, as far as I can tell. My best friend had an extensive setup, and several cars - 1/32 scale.

I had less room, so went for a lesser known brand called Champion, which was 1/40 scale - had a great permanent setup in my bedroom that my dad and I built. It was eventually sold off to finance my next hobby - R/C powerboats.

Thank you for the smile. I just went back 50 years in the blink of an eye. Such fun memories. I had a magnesium framed formula one style car. Fast but I still would only win a race on rare occasions. Some folks had some serious cars and skill. SMILES!!!

Thanks to a good friend we built 1/24 slots. His dad owned a commercial slot car track in our little town. We built everything from scratch and boy were they fast. Buses, tow trucks, whatever.

That was high tech toys when I was a kid. It was easy to get into it via a dad very much into model railroads, crafts and antiques.

In college we brought a course I made on a plywood board to my flat and found there were improved cars by then. For a brief period that became center of fun for far more adult parties.

The modifications were fun. We polished the brushes, put graphite on the axles for lube, and searched for rubber washers and materials that would be better tires.

I recall the cheats too - putting a peg at rear of the car.

For us it was all HO gauge. My dad built a rather large train layout in the basement and the boys made the streets from the slot car tracks. I'm not sure the exact ages we were when it was a thing. The energy as I recalled was all about bicycles, motorcycles and a 1947 Jeep from around age 13 on.

This thread brings back old memories. I mean old (50 years ago). I remember my father taking me to a slot car raceway sort of place when I was 12 or 13. I had a modified Astro V. Wow.

This was in Hempstead, LI, NY. Big place on Hempstead turnpike.

The older I get, the more fond memories I have of my father.
