String suggestions-Hollowbody
I know strings are very much a personal thing, but I think it’s time to pick up a set or two and I’d like some opinions on two things...
PRS Hollowbody II Piezo. I like to run it mostly clean with a little Piezo mixed with the magnetic. I am very, very much a beginner. The guitar came with 10-46 and I’d like to stick with that gauge. Plain G or wound and why? Round wound or flat wound and why? Many thanks for whatever wisdom you can impart!

Hi Carol, On a hollow body electric, I usually like flat wound strings.
Might be a bit more tension than their round wound counterparts so a little harder to bend, but they are quiet and smooth feeling and have a nice warm jazzy tone. |

If you are wanting a more acoustic sound, then I would suggest experimenting with a heavier gauge. On my D'Angelico archtop I am using 13's. On my Tele copy I run 11's (I tried 12's but they didn't play right.
Always round wound Always wound G Just my 2cents worth |

String choice is personal and will depend on the music you play, the sound you are looking for and the feel. Honestly you are going to have to experiment to find out which strings you like. The good news is that strings aren't that expensive and it can be a lot of fun to experiment.
That said, I find I like the sound of pure nickel strings on my electrics and I use a 9 - 46 or 10 - 46 gauge, depending. On solid body guitars I recommend GHS Big Core Nickel Rockers, SIT Power Groove and Curt Mangan or Gibson Les Paul Signature 9 - 46. I typically use 10 - 46 for my semi-hollow. If you want to try flat-wound I recommend Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Swing Series 10s. Last edited by The Old Gaffer; 02-27-2021 at 07:29 AM. |

I have settled on thomastik infield jazz bepob flatwounds and I replace the wound g on my hollow body with straight.
I run the 11 set which is the lightest they do in the flat wounds. They also last for way longer than other strings for me. On my Tom Anderson semi hollow cobra a I run daddario nyxl 9-46 as I like Playing more bendy stuff on that one |

My musical journey has lead me to specific string sets for specific guitars. I try to maintain the same gauge on my electrics and acoustics.
On hollow-bodies I like a wound G. Especially if it has a Bigsby/trem. S.I.T. Is my electric brand. The .011’s come with a wound G and a non wound G. If you use .010’s I believe they include a spare B and small E. The string life is great and I can’t recall having any breaks. Plus, they’re cheap! Try as many brands/gauges as you can. It’s a cheap enough! And, “finger feel” makes a huge difference. I tried some DR dragon-skins on an acoustic and tore them off before playing 3 chords. IMHO they’re terribly rough on the hands. Hence the name I suppose.
