Wink The very Best Luthier in the UK!

Any ideas who this may be?

I know if I was in North America we could get together a list as long as your arm/a but for the UK??!

Here’s the task: My absolute beloved D28 (IMHO - Brazilian in its absolute finest glory), having been born back in 1966 is finally due for a neck reset

It’s not urgent as it plays amazing still. The neck is straight, the frets clean and even

But the saddle is now very low, doesn’t really have another file left for it, so I need to just get on and get the job done.

I would travel anywhere within the UK practically to deliver the guitar and there’s a few advertised but nothing beats a personal recommendation and I’d really like the very best to do this job for me.

Anybody have any recommendations?

Kindest Regards

RJ

Michael Watts would probably have some good recommendations as would David from Wolfram. Maybe they'll chime in as they sometimes post here. Good luck in finding the right person for the job that you need done.

Best,
Jayne

the way it seems to go is that they start off as repairers and make a few commisions, then the go full time builders and stop repairs.

My first thiught would be Dave King
Dave King has been servicing new and vintage Martin guitars for over 20 years and in 2008 was credited as the only UK authorised service centre for Martin Guitars.

Also : Phil at www.davidsoninstruments.com

Another thought - Charlie at https://www.guitarexperience.co.uk/

I am, sadly currently without a tame tech - unsettling.

Russell Bennett. He's in Durham and builds spectacular guitars. Just done a neck reset on a friends vintage Gibson...lovely job.

He's on Facebook but if you need his details get in touch

Default The very Best Luthier in the UK!

The guys at Bagnasco & Casati in Italy. I haven’t seen their repair work, but I have a guitar built by them and it’s amazing. Check out their website. http://www.guitar-repair.eu. Oops, never mind. You asked for UK and I thought it was EU

'Best' is subjective of course but Ricky Claffey, David Anthony Reid, Brook Guitars, Jonny Kinkead, A J Lucas at Lucas Guitars, Lythgoe Guitars, Jimmy Moon on Arran, Pete Turner, Ryan Gibson, Rory Dowling at Taran Guitars, Thomas Handley, Steve Toon.

There's a few for you to conjure with!

Hi RJ,

Another vote for Jim Fleeting from me. He's done some great work for me, and I would trust him with anything.

Surprised that I am the first to bring up Rory Dowling of Taran guitars, he is considered at the very top of his game right now and has and is building for Martin Simpson. Another is Rosie Heydenrych of Turnstone, she is known for sourcing all English woods.

^ This.

We have some fabulous luthiers (e.g. Rory as mentioned already), but if its repair work that you need, then the requirements are slightly different from having a custom guitar built for you.

Cheers,
Steve

Charlie at https://www.guitarexperience.co.uk/as someone above has stated above. Based in Hampton Wick (nr Kingston) SW London.

He used to be at Chandlers in Kew, probs the best known guitar shop in the UK before it closed.

He is working on my old Yamaha at the moment and set up my Martin 000-18 a few years ago. Can't recommend enough.
