Default Taylor 526(e) or 528(e) or Fall 516e

Hi friends,

I am looking to buy a mahogany Taylor 526 or 528 (or 526e, 528e), non-cutaway, with shaded edgeburst finish.

I believe the edgeburst started in 2016. It is easy to spot vs. the earlier models which have a pickguard.

I would also consider a 520 or 524 in the interim, but prefer to avoid the slotted headstock introduced later. Not interested in a 522 or any of the 300s.

I would also consider a 2013 516e Fall or “FLTD.

Thanks!

Bumping. Anyone?

Or if you at least own one of these, give me your feedback on the guitar here.

Smile Hmmmm....

Welcome to the candy store! Enjoy your Quest!!!

Have you actually PLAYED one of these and if so did it ring your chimes?

here is my non patented list of ???s for buying guitars you can not audition in person:

My usual questions. Please disregard any you already answered:

Has this been completely inspected by a GOOD Luthier?

If not, Please put on inspection goggles. (Not beer goggles). Haha.

And PLEASE INSPECT ENTIRE INSTRUMENT CLOSELY.

Year built? Wood species used? Type of glue used?

Please post or send clear closeup pics of any and all dings, cracks, finish issues etc.

Is the neck angle correct? Please check with a straight- edge laying on the frets. It should just clear the top of the bridge/bottom of the exposed saddle.

What is the action (string height above fret) at the first and 12th fret ?

How much Saddle showing?

Is the top sunken above the bridge or bellied behind it?

Fret dress needed, or needed soon?

Is the intonation correct? Open strings in tune should match at 12th fret.

Any mods or repairs besides pickup if it has one?

Pup Year and manufacturer? And does it work properly?

Neck set needed?
Is the neck, not the relief, straight and true?
Any (other) cracks in the wood, or the finish?

Braces, binding, frets and bridge all secure and tightly glued? Please inspect closely! Especially the bindings at the waist.

Any cracks, dings or scratches not visible in the photos?
Any rattles, buzzes, or unwanted noises when played moderately?
Any high frets?
Tuners smooth, with no slippage?

Original case? in good Condition? All latches work as intended and no funky smells, or other issues?

So, is this ready to go to work without a trip to my Luthier?

I always ask as I have had these (and more) issues on seemingly nice internet instruments.

Thanks for the reply. I had considered it, but my initial understanding is that it would be cost-restrictive for me to have one BTO instead. Used in excellent condition, these models go for $1700-2200. Any idea what a custom order would run?

Check with Acoustic cellar guitars in Clarksville Ga. I think they had a used one last time I was over there. Ask for Patton or Luke. 706-754-7425. Tell em Larry sent you...good luck with the search.

Thanks for the replies.

- For the 2013 516e, I am only interested in the Fall limited edition (FLTD).

- For the 526e/528e, I am only interested in the later shaded edgeburst models (no pickguard, no cutaway).

How about a First Edition 528e without the edgeburst?

I have seen a few of the first editions with a little more red to the wood as opposed to most of the pre-edgeburst models which seem more chocolate. That’s really what I am after. I’ll DM.

Edit - I actually messaged you in March here asking about your impressions of your 528. I was searching high and low for comments on them and came across an old thread where you mentioned yours.
