Default 1974 Alvarez DY85

Just bougt this beauty the other day and never even heard of the guitars before. After playing it for a bit I realized it was a must have.. especially for the price. (Serial number 9539.. just Incase anyone knows anything about it!)

Anyone else have the same model?

Does anyone know the difference between Dy75 , DY85 and Dy95?

The reason why you're in love with it is because it's a K. Yairi. The Alvarez branding is just because Alvarez was the US distributor for Yairi guitars.

DY75+10=DY85+10=DY95.

I have no idea but have wondered the same thing. If you find out, please let me know.

Google the numbers and you'll likely get some Reverb listings and they often have some specs. You might get all your answers that way.

Enjoy that beautiful guitar.

Very similar to DY-90 (spruce over laminated rosewood), but less Abalone and other bling.
My '85 and '86 DY-90s are the best sounding guitars I've held in my hands. Yairi necks are almost always straight, some have belly bulge, as any can. If yours is straight with good action at its age that says a ton. Very under appreciated.

Here it is...

1974 Alvarez Yairi DY85. Serial number 9539, heel of neck says 498133. Stamped date on label says 18.2.75 though... Can anyone tell me what kind of woods were used for this model.

I just looked at one on Reverb...very nice, kind of along the lines of a Martin D41.

https://reverb.com/item/4201119-vint...-guitar-w-ohsc

The seller's description says that the back & sides are "bookmatched African Jacaranda". Here's the thing, though...first, I always thought Jacaranda is a South American/Caribbean tree so "African"...? I suppose it's possible...when I lived in Los Angeles, I used to see Jacaranda trees all over the place.

The other thing is that I've read that the word "Jacaranda" is used as a sort of generic term for "Rosewood" in parts of South America where Portuguese is widely spoken, and they use the term rather loosely for anything that even resembles rosewood, so "Jacaranda" could literally mean Brazilian rosewood.

The point is this...Brazilian rosewood is what I thought when I looked at the pictures...I mean, it really, really looks like BRZ. Very nice looking guitar BTW, and as stated, being a K.Yairi, would have a very fine build quality.
