I was overseas for virtually the entire decade and missed a lot of good music.

I notice a lot of the same stuff I grew up with on people's list, a lot of us are around the same age.
However, I also notice a lot of non acoustic stuff. If I made a list today, it wouldn't contain a lot of the stuff I thought was "great" at the time. |

I didn't post on this when I first saw it because I thought it a VERY daunting task (which it is) so I decided to make it easier on my self and post the albums that I would have likely chosen at that time (over the years those have likely changed) Some years there's no way to pick just one - So here goes...
'70 Sweet Baby James - JT / Shilo - Neil Diamond / If You Could Read My Mind - Lightfoot '71 Madman Across The Water and 11-17-70 - Elton / Blue - Joni Mitchell / Tapestry - Carole King '72 You Don't Mess Around With Jim - Jim Croce '73 Abandoned Luncheonette - Hall and Oates '74 A-1-A - Buffett '75 Captain Fantastic - Elton '76 2112 - Rush / Greatest Stories Live - Harry Chapin / Leftoverture - Kansas '77 (Huge list of ties) Steely Dan - Aja / Runnin' on Empty - Jackson / Grand Illusion - Styx / Foreigner (debut) / Farewell to Kings - Rush / I Robot - Alan Parsons / Animals - Pink Floyd / Point of Know Return - Kansas / Hotel California - Eagles '78 Van Halen (debut) / Infinity - Journey / Stranger In Town - Seger / Hemispheres - Rush '79 The Wall - Pink Floyd / Breakfast In America - Supertramp / Van Halen II In '79 I started working at the record store (until '87) and then my tastes changed drastically, so my favorite recordings of those years from the "now perspective" would be much different.

Good call on Souvenirs - definitely should have included it myself! Also probably Twin Sons of Different Mothers in '78 with Weisberg.

I will wear it with pride.
I have been a big Buffett fan since the mid 70's. There are a lot of gems ln all those albums. It goes way deeper than the greatest hits stuff. For me, after hearing side B to the A1A album I was hooked for life. |

I could have put each of his albums, up to about Last Mango in Paris in my list too. JB's music probably saved my life a couple of times. I used to do a 3 hour set of strictly Buffett once a month for the Michigan fan club "Fins to the North" back in the late 90's. It's always funny to me - many who say "I hate Jimmy Buffett" have never heard those deep album tracks - heck, most have only heard Margaritaville and Come Monday. So many great tunes early on.....saw him live about 10 times between '77 and '91 or so. It just changed a lot after that, and you can barely get or afford the tickets now. First show at Pine Knob outside of Detroit, the pavillion wasn't even sold out and I think the ticket was around 15 bucks!

I know what you mean about ~after Last Mango. But then again I was floored by Fruitcakes. Just masterful. Similar for Barometer Soup, and still a lot of gems on everything since. I'm still not too fond of the latest (Songs from St. Somewhere) except for a few songs, especially "Oldest Surfer on the Beach" which was written specifically for Buffett by Mark Knopfler and given to Buffett as a gift with Knopfler playing some very tasteful guitar lead. I'm not interested in the concerts anymore either. I don't care for the large venues where you can't see or hear, the crowds, and the ticket prices. In the late 70's and early 80's Buffett played the Paladium at Carowinds outside of Charlotte. Outdoor venue that seated maybe 2000 at the time. Those were great concerts. I will always be a lover of Buffett's music and am still hoping for one more great album before its all over. Buffett will be 73 years old on Christmas Day. I will add, I was/am a BIG "Fingers Taylor" fan. His harp playing was nothing short of amazing and a HUGE part of the music. I hated to see him leave, understand some of it from direct personal experience with Fingers, and am saddened about his current health condition. He was truly one of the best harp players on the planet. Last edited by 12barBill; 10-24-2019 at 07:24 AM. |
