Check out my recording clip!
I bought a new tube mic. Called Lauden Horizon.
I wasn't gonna go with a name brand I wasn't familiar with but I tried it at the store and it was better than the RE20 and C414XLS.... I recorded a small clip with it. THe sound quality seems to be degraded when I post it on the www (first time posting something online). Sounds better on my desktop. Anyways, tell me what you guys think!!!! I hope this mic can last foreverrrrr.... it's $$$$$$ http://soundcloud.com/you/tracks |

That worked.
First off, nice playing and nice voice. Mark Knopfler-like. As for the mic, it reproduces the sound very well. The placement might have been a little off. It get's a little boomy from the strumming, but when that initial boom goes away, the remaining sound comes across very natural. Either move it away a little more or move it slightly forward (up the neck) from it's current position.

Thanks Rob for the compliment.
Yea I have to experiment with mic placement. THere is a -10db and a -20db switch. Maybe at the distance I recorded this with I should try the -10db next time. |

sounds nice. i'll assume you did it together with the vocals and guitar? you might want to multitrack it, but some people don't like doing that. if you like doing both at the same time, then i'd mess around with mic placement a little. there's a bit of 80 to 100 hz rumble in it. you might like that, some might find it distracting.
what daw did you use to record it? you can eq it a little more, and i'd drop the reverb a little too, but that's if i was producing. also, the pads aren't going to do a whole lot more for you. see if there's a bass rolloff instead. that alone would get rid of some of that rumble. all in all, it sounds very nice. well played and well sang. edit: i see the mic doesn't have any bass roll off, and it actually has a natural hump at 50 hz, so you'll have to watch out for that, especially close micing a guitar. |

Thanks!
I was using Garageband. The post processing is limited compared to what I just started using - logic. I just use the EQ preset for male lead vocals on logic and it gets rid of a lot of the bass. I'd be concerned though for songs like this were you're singing in a low voice on purpose... but I don't really know how all that works. But yea, I'm liking logic. And you're right on the mic placement. I placed it a bit higher, more like forehead height... sounds a lot better. And I've also treated my room a bit since this recording. |
