Binding repair
My old CBS has some missing binding in two areas. About a half inch in one area. I'd assume the guitar would need to be completely rebound. Is this an expensive prepare? It has no affect on the sound of the guitar.

That's what I'm thinking. Patch the three spots and move on. What`s the cost, ballpark?
It's a 45 year old laminate top (spruce) CBS-era Fender. But every time I give her a play (I'm more of a strummer/rhythm player) I can't seem to put her down. She's nothing like my Seagull or Alvarez. Even the Yamaha (laminate Spruce). And she's not the one I play the most. She's simply different- a hollow sound is the best way I can describe her. "Different"... Thanks!

I would check with a local luthier about patching some binding in and off you go.
Pulling out all the old binding and installing new is EXPENSIVE. It's a ton of work and usually doesn't look all that clean without a LOT of work on the finish afterwards. Cost wise - you have several things in your favor 1. It's on the outside so easier to get at. 2. Inexpensive instrument. The repair will be made to ensure no damage is done by a bump - not to be invisible. 3. Plastic binding is cheap. And gluing it in place is not particularly difficult. |

My thinking is, and I'm no luthier, if it isn't structural. Unless it is causing problems, leave it as is, or find some filler of a similar colour and use that. Of course I'd never do that on a high end guitar, but on a beater, why not?

Binding is actually structural. It protects the glue joint of the top/back to the sides from cracking apart from bumps on the corner...
Guitars without binding are very sensitive to corner impacts... As anyone with an old Stella or one of those cheap Baby Taylor's will attest.... I would have someone patch in pieces to restore the binding. |
