I used to have the one electric also but then while I was not looking, about a month ago it somehow turned into "the two"

I guess I never was really on a search for the "one". For many, many years I only had what I could afford, which was a cheaper acoustic and a nice banjo. As I became more successful, I expanded the collection to include a nice rosewood B/S guitar and added a mahogany one too. Eventually, I added some electrics and improved my acoustic collection. So, I really can't say that I was ever on a "the one" quest. I like the variety of having multiple guitars.

I wasn't either. What about the three or four or five...?

This is the cool thing about this discussion.
Some were never on a hunt for the “one”. Myself, I was on that search for decades. It illustrates how different we think and behave. Neither is better, just different. I firmly believe there isn’t a “one” electric guitar for me, so it’s easy to see why there’s no “one” acoustic guitar for others. I’m sure somewhere there’s a player or two who have found that “one” electric guitar. I understand their satisfaction.

Thanks everyone for the lively opinions. For the believers out there, was it obvious when you found the one or did you have to let the emotions cool down and keep assuring yourself that yes this is the one. Or was it more of an impulse purchase that has been validated afterwards?

I have noticed that with both my acoustic and electric guitars and gear, sometimes they sound wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful. This has happened at a two night gig where nothing changes from one night to the next.
It is obvious to me that I am hearing things differently on different occasions. It logically follows that no matter what gear I use, it will sometimes sound good and sometimes sound not so good. So why should I go on a never ending gear quest? I choose not to. I have good equipment. It is just a fact of musical life.

As a believer, I experienced this. First, it was very obvious the McCollum was the one I had been searching for, from the first strum. When I found the “one’” I owned a fantastic Goodall GC Cocobolo/Spruce that I had hand picked from several brands, models etc., keeping it while buying several other Goodalls (unplayed), and selling them almost immediately. A great lesson in buying guitars unplayed. I kept the GC for over a year, pulling it out periodically to A/B it against the McCollum. It took that long, even though on each A/B comparison it was clear the McCollum was the superior instrument. I just couldn’t part with it until I knew it wouldn’t get played and it was too good to let it set around, so I sent it on to a good home.
