Norman Blake's Savannah Rag
Well, I am totally gripped by this piece!
His narrative at the beginning is pretty humorous as well. I am somewhat solid fingerstyle player but am at loss as to how I might start working this up. The Homespun offerings from Norman seem to focus just upon flatpicking. Is this song played in hybrid fashion, with pick and bare fingers? Lastly, does anyone know of someone who can teach this style of ragtime guitar in the NJ/NYC metro area? Thanks and all leads greatly appreciated. Best, David |

Sounds to me like it's fingerpicked, similar to his "Six White Horses" on "Whiskey before Breakfast". The liner notes for that album indicates that he used metal fingerpicks, at least back in the day.

David,
I just came across your post about Blake's Savannah Rag. I dont have the book but the sheet music is in "Norman Blake's Anthology, (transcribed by Steve Kaufman)". Good luck. It has taken me 2 years, off and on, to get to playing something close to it. I'd attempt to learn it, get frustrated and walk away from it for a while. I learn mostly by ear and had a big breakthrough when I downloaded it to a program called Audacity, (available free online) where I could slow it down and chop it up into small pieces. Mike |

Sounds like straight fingerpicking to me - no flat pick. Have fun with it. Rick

Most of Blake's and Tony Rice's stuff is cross-picked, using a thumb pick and fingers, a style unto itself. Youtube has Blake and Rice versions of Church Street Blues, very different and both wonderful.............

Mr. Jelly - that was great. In fact, was compelled to watch the rest of that players clips. Good stuff. Thanks.
