The latest single 0 is coming right along. I hope to get the back on by the end of the day.

I love the look of that Single 0 with the cutaway! Such a great looking design Bruce!

Bruce, do you use peone to attach the back as well as the top? Or do you use a kerfed lining?

I would need to employ elves to use peone on the back as they would have to be individually installed while the back was clamped in place. Even then, the elves might suffocate as the air flow would be non-existent. My cat sleeps under the blankets and lives, so maybe they would too. I use Kerfed linings, as you will Be able to see in a picture later today.

As a point of honor, I offer this:

Bruce, I’m assuming there is a tonal benefit to the peone used on the top as opposed to using kerfing as on the back?

I can vary their size and the density of their placement with the goal of adjusting the stiffness of the connection between the top plate and the ribs. And I do.

Also, if I used typical kerfed lining, I would need to use a mold. Or at least I think I would, but there may be a work-around. With the peone method there is no need to shape the side to fit the top, as I believe one must with kerfed lining.

The freedom afforded by not using a mold is huge. If I want to make a new design, all I have to do is draw the template and the bracing on the top, and make the rest of the parts to fit. If you look at Tim's nearby thread on what it takes for him to make a new design, you will see the difference. And if I think my new design needs tweaking, I am not in any way married to the first attempt, I just draw the "improved" version on the next top. I do generally make a paper template, actually, and often make notes on the paper to facilitate aesthetic changes. Until I am settled, I can often use the same template and effect changes by moving it around as I trace it. If you look at pictures of my work on TheList, you may be able to track the aesthetic sophistication over the years within a model type, particularly my JB series.

If there is magic in this guitar, it is there now.

Bruce, thank you! I knew there was a reason, and it helps greatly to understand why!

The latest single 0 is a box, and I have begun the binding process.

Thank you, TreeNewt. You’ve seemed a fan for a while now, but beyond your claim to Oklahoma, I don’t know much about you. I don’t need to, of course, and I do appreciate your support. Does your name appear on “the list”?

Well, my given name is Matt. I’m just a huge fan of your work and your willingness to explain so much of it to us all. I’m the Matt that emailed you earlier this week about the old video of yourself, Richard Hoover and Ervin. :-) I’ve been dancing around my first guitar build for some time now, and a few years back you were kind enough to give me some great advice via email, which i refer to often. As to “the list”, I’m afraid I’m Un-enlightened!

Aha! I had a feeling you had a greater presence in my life. TheList is a page on my site that documents what I remember about the instruments I have built, and who owns them today.
