It's time to assemble the neck. In this photo, you can see the various neck parts resting on the box – the ebony-bound Braz. fretboard with ebony dot fretmarkers at frets 5, 7, 9, 12 & 15; the roughed-out mahogany neck, ready for the trussrod and fretboard; the headplate on a sheet of ebony (the excess will be trimmed away leaving a 'bound' headplate) and, on the right, under the raw headstock, the two bookmatched sections of the backplate glued to sheets of b/w/b purfling. When the backplate is glued on and the headstock is trimmed to shape, the sheet will leave an edge of b/w/b purfling under the backplate.
A closeup of the bound body, fretboard & soundhole. Note how the Braz. purfling on the body matches the thinner Braz. rings in the rosette. Closeup of the position markers on the side of the fretboard at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 & 15. The head- & backplates have been glued to the headstock and trimmed. Now the fretboard is glued to the neck. It'll be time to start shaping it soon...

The neck has its fretboard and is now ready to be carved into shape. The flitch-matched straight-grained Brazilian rosewood in the back, sides, headplate, backplate and fretboard gives such a beautiful, consistent look…

The neck is clamped down and prepped for shaping. Note that an ebony heel cap with a purfling sheet underneath has been glued on and the excess wood has been removed from the sides of the neck.
The heel is shaped.

Removing excess wood from the ‘shoulders’ of the neck before final shaping.
Note the cardboard hourglass shape resting across the vise. This is the template Tom’s using to shape the neck’s profile. My 12-year-old Circa OM has a neck profile inspired by that of a vintage Martin, and one I find just perfect for my hands, so I specified the same profile when my Bashkin and Buendia were built. That way, whichever guitar I pick up will have an identical neck and feel familiar and comfortable. I wanted the same profile for this build also, so I used a fine-toothed contour gauge to get the Circa’s profile at frets 2 and 9, where Tom requested them, traced the curves onto a piece of sturdy cardboard, cut them out and then sent the template to Tom. Using the template to check the profile at fret 2. Once the excess wood is removed, the basic shaping is done with a rasp.

The completed headplate and backplate with Tom’s signature ‘crescent channel’ up the center of the backplate. The b/w/b purfling sheet underneath the backplate is now visible. Notice how the white line of purfling around the headplate aligns with the purfling lines of the bound fretboard.

Tom's attention to details that many wouldn't notice speaks volumes on his mastery of his craft.

This instrument is looking truly outstanding in craftsmanship and choice of materials. I like many of the design choices of Mr. Doerr, but I particularly like the "crescent channel" on his headstocks. It's one of those little details that sets his guitars apart.

Just one minor correction: the template pic shows a width of 1 7/8" at the second fret. The nut width will be 1 3/4" – only 1/8" narrower than your 'wheelhouse'.
My Buendia's nut width is 1 3/4" and my Bashkin & Circa are just a tiny 1/32" wider, so 1 3/4" is pretty much what I'm used to. What's more important to me than the nut width is the string spacing, so here are the specs I requested for the Doerr: Equidistant string spacing at nut, from middle of string slots, 1st string to 6th: 1 1/2" Equidistant string spacing at saddle, from middle of string slots, 1st string to 6th: 2 1/4"

In another thread, this quote from SuperB23 (who has had many 'cream of the crop' guitars pass through his hands) has certainly stoked my anticipation for the Doerr...
