As we begin a new year Mary and I will post some goings on within the shop from time to time. Right now we are busy preparing guitars for a Blue Grass Show in March and also guitars for the Artisan Guitar Show in April. We are looking forward to reuniting with old friends and making new ones. I wonder what these 3 amigos are smiling about?

This is a sister guitar of the Artisan guitar batch. It's still in the raw stage. Not sanded down, no finish added, not yet buffed. I felt the fretboard needed something mundane in color to allow the Kokopelli to stand out. The print I chose for the fret markers made me giggle as if something alien heard the music and out of the clear blue sky decided to join the guitarist to dance a moment leaving only a foot print behind. When I design a spec guitar for fun I am able to play with the aesthetics outcome.

I'm sure my Mr. Luthier might sometimes wonder where I come from. There just might be a little bit of a hippy in me. I like this little guy as he is getting into his guitar. He's losing himself in his music and I lost myself in him. He makes me smile every single time I look at him.

This is one of a batch of 6 MacNaughts. Green banded malachite and turquoise fret position markers being glued into a Wenge fretboard. More pics to come as we finish these up.

You are correct my friend. This is only #3. Laying out the nut and bridge pin spacing on a 12 string always makes me take pause and scratch my head a few times… This one will be on display, in a few months, at the Artisan Guitar Show.

This post is not meant to invite any other subject concerning any part of this guitar. It is not here to declare/share/invite or discuss historical controversy. This is strictly a guitar with unique fret markers.

This week we have spent more time on the McKnight Bullet guitar. I can hear you now. "Say Whaaaat?"

While cutting a large block of wood that has been in our possession many years Tim discovered somewhere in time someone shot the tree. The tree did what trees do and grew around the wound and wasn't offended in the least. To our advantage the bullet remained safely in the hole while cutting and we decided to keep it in tact to create a bit of history in the guitar. There is a professional on the subject just a few miles up the road from us who analyzed the bullet and to our surprise he also owned cases from that same time frame in his collection. Tim and I will never claim to be pros on this subject but we did find it intriguing. I had asked Tim to find out all he could and maybe even get one or two cases to somehow use this as part of the design. Since this is a spec guitar and we are not under obligations to do it right the first time Tim decided to and try and try again in inlay the butts as fret markers. After some dedicated trial and error we knew it would be more wise to lean on our dear friend Harvey Leach. He got a call from Tim concerning information of oopsies. (Thank you HARVEY LEACH for his educational information.)

We think this guitar will be a fun piece of history on so many levels. If created correctly it will be for a player to play, an art lover to admire or a history buff to shout with joy that this is a playable piece of art. I come up with silly ideas on the design side but that is what makes us a team. Is this good? I can't answer that question but it does seem to work for us. So here I go. I am clueless on the what some numbers mean but according to the one who educated us this bullet was from the year 1889.

We are looking forward to catching up with you and Ryan plus ogling what's on your display table as well. You have one of the coolest headstock's in the business plus the stuff underneath it isn't too shabby either
