Sheridan WY, and places nearby - looking for artist / sculptor Dakota ? / Montana ?
Hi,
I am looking for the creator of a certain metal sculpture I saw in Sheridan WY. This is absolutely a wild moose chase...goose chase...whatever. I need your help. About 2011, I was in Sheridan helping build a Habitat house. In the lobby or entrance to one of the main street restaurants there was a metal "kinetic sculpture" about 3'-4' long featuring running horses. All the horses would actually "run" together if someone the touched the sculpture. As I recall it was made of almost all flat black sheet metal. Each horse was mechanically interconnected to at least one other, and each horse sat on a set of teeter-totter fulcrums or balance points. I was told that the maker was "somewhere in Dakota or Montana" and that there was a 70' long set of these running horses in his front yard. That's all the clues I have. Requesting your help so I can locate and contact this artist. Thanks, H165 |

My advice would be to google "running horse sculpture (Dakota/Montana) and look at the image results to see if any of them look like what you saw. Might be the best way to find the artist.
Here is the Dakota results: https://www.google.com/search?q=runn...&bih=625&dpr=1 And Montana: https://www.google.com/search?q=runn...h=625&biw=1360 Had one of the coolest experiences in my life dropping down out of the Bighorns very early in the morning into Sheridan with the sun rising. Incredibly gorgeous...this was in '87 - pic doesn't come close to doing it justice!

By the way - I just sent a note to a friend who lived there for a long time to see if she had any input.

We usually leave our cabin in the Bighorns for a day and drive into Sheridan to eat and visit Kings saddlery. You have made me want to find and see that sculpture. Be there in August.

Thank you. I have tried many searches, with so few results I'm beginning to think I dreamed it. I bet I've looked at 2000 images and 100 websites. Still looking, and I won't give up.

My friend is reaching out to people she knows who still live there. Not sure if it will yield any answers but worth a try!

Maybe send an email to one of the established restaurants on the same street and see if it rings a bell for them?
