Well Spruce Top, I hope you're happy. As 2010 dawned, I had no intention whatsoever of buying a carbon guitar. But as of yesterday, I'm officially the owner of an Emerald X5!

I'd never heard of Emerald before your post, but I started searching, and found that I was just in time to demo the X5 through Mac Nichol's excellent "Road Trip" program. The X5 succeeds where every other carbon guitar I'd seen failed: It's small, but had a traditional soundhole for my pickups. The wood laminate is beautiful, and fits my aesthetic much better than the colored carbon look. It's extremely portable, fantastically playable, and to my mind, sounds much better than its closest competition, the Cargo.

Thanks for helping me find my new guitar!

That would be the one I'd have voted in, too. If there were some examples avaiable locally to try, and if they were small-bodies and not too pricey, I'd definitely be interested in trying one.

Can't add much for your 1st and 3rd points but, fwiw and regarding Composite Acoustic guitars in a seated position, I can add that I tried out a GX and a GXi which are ostensibly full-sized guitars and the first thing I noticed was that, with their contoured backs, they tuck into your body like a much smaller-sized guitar. (Holy run-on sentences, Batman!)

I tried a RainSong a few years ago, and liked it okay, but they're all just too expensive. If they ever get into my price range, I'll get more interested.

The AGF Special OX Raw that is on order (thanks, Tarpman) will be my first ever carbon guitar. I am looking forward to receiving it and seeing/hearin/feeling what all the fuss is about! I'll let you know.
