Slowly developing a finish & some details
Kent is getting close on the back and side finish (perhaps one more coat) and the Sapele binding continues to separate from the dark, rich, textural tones of the Wenge.
The top will need a few more coats to develop its finish and the catalpa continues to darken while the cross-silking is further revealed. Kent came up with a custom ebony button design to use with some black Schertler tuning machines. The shape is reflective of the headstock shape with chamfered edges like many other features on the guitar. The dark value of the ebony will contrast the Wenge Headplate but tie into the ebony bridge design.

Tuner Buttons
Here are the custom ebony buttons on the headstock. Notice that there are no exposed collar nuts for a cleaner aesthetic around the tuner posts.

Really love the clean look of the headstock--this thread has been great to watch! Wonderful collaboration all the way around...

Thanks again for all the comments.
The finish is done on the back and sides but the top still needs a bit of work. Hope to get the last coat tomorrow but it could go into the weekend. I want to keep the headstock as free of hardware and as planar as possible so I'm either going to use a magnet or screw the truss rod cover from the back. That is, once we decide on the material. After seeing the buttons, I want to try ebony... For the tuners, I'm going to counterbore the back of the headstock and push the tuner bushings in from behind so they won't be visible and the tuners will look just like they do in the photo. Thanks for looking.

Bridge
Kent crafted an ebony bridge using his signature design. The arc end is reflective of the curved headstock shape and the ebony ties into the tuner hardware and button shapes and materials.

End graft
Here is the flamed catalpa end graft. It mirrors the inset Backstrip, but projects out like the truss rod cover and rosette.

It's coming out really well. I take it it's wenge fretboard? Beautiful texture...

The innovative over the top understatement of this project makes it my favorite ever. Having played a number of Chasson's, I cannot doubt the performance will be in line with the aesthetics. What a treat!

Much better than under the top oversatement! A very nice guitar, indeed. Agreed the understatement is very elegant.

Thanks Bruce. coming from you, that means a lot.
Keep in mind that you contributed to the design. The modified Venetian cutaway design is indeed yours in its origin! The most difficult part for me as a trained designer, was letting go of details of the design being defined prospectively in drawings, and trusting the craftsman (Kent) to find his way working with the wood. Kent did a beautiful job adapting the essence of the craftsman style design aesthetic into a functional and toneful guitar.

Patience
A hand oiled (Tru-Oil) finish is taking longer than expected (more coats and sanding) to achieve the target finish...It should be done next week...
