New Martin OM-28 VTS or 2018 Martin OM-28 or Used 2018 OM-28 MAD
Hey guys, long time creeper on the forums, first time joining and posting.
As you can see from the description, I’m debating on buying a Martin OM-28 but I can’t quite decide. Truthfully, I’ve been waiting, hoping, that I would find a used OM-28 with Madagascar back and sides and an Adirondack too but I haven’t had any luck. However, I’ve now grown impatient and can’t wait any longer. With that said, it’s come down between either a New OM-28 VTS, New 2018 OM-28 or a Used 2018 OM-28 with Madagascar back and sides (unfortunately, it doesn’t have the Adirondack top. Instead, it’s Sitka). The actual guitar can be seen at the link below. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Ma...stic-Guitar.gc I would love to get some opinions on which guitar you might choose over the others and why. The reason I have chosen this model is because I love fingerpicking and I was able to play one a little over a year ago and fell in love. I know there are other makers who have great guitars but I have to have Martin. Martin was the first guitar I ever played and I haven’t ever had the chance of owning one of my own. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank in Advance! Last edited by Achilles; 06-07-2019 at 08:23 PM. |

Maybe check out a dealer custom OM28 like Reno's:
https://www.guitarhotline.com/martin...uitar-2210062/ That's only a couple hundred more than the one you listed at GC and it has Adirondack and is brand new. |

I have an OM-28 VTS (Sitka) from one of our forum sponsors Jon Garon at My Favorite Guitars. It's really good. It's the only small guitar (I'm a dread guy) I own. Might be worth a look. Or he can spec out an OM-28 for you through the Custom Shop if you're really looking for Adirondack over Madagascar? Either way, he's a great guy to deal with and very knowledgeable in all things "Martin". Best of luck!

Wait!!! Be patient........it will come.
Have you tried putting a add on 'buy & sell' at diff. forums for your guitar? Don't waste good $$$$ on something you don't quite have your heart set on. I was in the same position. I wanted a OM-18V used for a long time, took a while, finally got it! By the way, I haven't played any of the git you mentioned but, I had a OM-28V awhile back and it was a very lovely git with loads of grunt. Good finger picker. Good luck |

In this case, I wouldn’t rule out the 000-28. It is short scale (vs long scale of OM—same as dread) which you may really enjoy. Watch out for bracing dimensions as for some reason, Martin uses 5/16” on many 000 models. I just bought a 000-28MD which has short scale and 1/4 GE scalloping and I couldn’t be happier. The playability is much softer than any long scale. Should be perfect for your style.

In that case........the 2018 000-28 reimagined sounds like the git.

I’ve got a 2018 OM-28 Standard that Jon Garon at MFG picked out for me. It sounds amazing, and has the most beautiful EIR back & sides I’ve ever seen. I don’t see how anything could be much better...
...not sure why the pics are sideways. |

If you must have adirondack over madagascar why not look for a used OM28 Authentic 1931?

At the point that I decided that a rosewood Martin OM was the target guitar for me, I owned an OM-21, OM-28, OM28v and now an OM42 (the keeper) which I have now owned for 15 years.
What I learned was that once I had zeroed on on the basic guitar architecture (Martin rosewood OM) it was a matter of playing a lot of them and finding the one that really distinguished itself in my ears. The OM-42 was chosen as the best from a field of 8 OM-42's and they were all a little different. My point is that you should forget about your wood choice and start playing different individual guitars until you find one that clicks. You might find a guitar with the wood you want, but it just might not be the one with the combination of build and luck that makes a factory built guitar unique. It is not about the wood or the maker it is about the individual guitar IMHO.

Another possible consideration is the OM28 Marquis, that's rosewood with Adirondack top. They stopped making them in 2014 but you can find them.
I have one and love it, tone is a little dryer than the typical sitka spruce top and has superb dynamics, maybe a little more headroom. https://reverb.com/item/22953642-200...-om-28-marquis
