Today's mix of activities include preparation/bending of binding material and cleanup of the closed box.
First off, the Sapele binding and thin Maple purfling are glued together and dried. Talk about working small spaces, look at that bead of glue. When dry, shave the high edges and run them through the sander to remove any squeeze out. Then it is off to the bender. Video 1 | Video 2

Just a reminder how rough the box looks before cleanup.
Cutting away the overhang on the top. Video | Now we know why they wear ear protection!!!!!!! Sanding and cleanup of the sides. Video 1 | Video 2 | Video 3 Here Tim is brushing on shellac to bind the soft wood fibers in the top which makes the router cut smoother. Video Looks like Mary was trying to get a McSelfie but Tim was busy. That's a wrap for today. Stay tuned .....

I used to think that just closing the box was the big accomplishment - until I attempted routing for binding. This stage is my least favorite, so my ears always perk up when I see someone else document it. It’s not easy and it requires patience and practice - which lead to a good system.
In this case, it used to seem extraneous to me to use a flush cut router bit to trim the overhang of the plates from the sides - but now I see it as the first of two steps of prepping the sides to get perfectly flat profile. The next step, being of course to use either a spindle sander or a good old fashioned cabinet scraper and a straight edge to get things perfectly level. That’s so that the binding channel jig can have a perfectly consistent surface to act as a guide when routing out the channels. If the middle of the side is bowed out or cupped it’s going to cause the router bit to cut at an angle or leave the channel too shallow or too deep in spots and have your binding and/or purfling look like crap.

Tim cut the binding channels today and installed the end wedge.
Here Tim uses a stationary router and moves the body to cut the binding channels. Tim makes a test cut to set up the binding cutter router bit depth for the end wedge. Then the cut for the end wedge. Gather the end wedge materials. Voila ... an installed end wedge to match that gorgeous rosette. Just guessing but I would think tomorrow is binding and possibly purfling on the top.

Indeed! I love the figure in the Sapele on the sides as well.

Thanks Nemoman! This is going to be one of those abalone everywhere kind of guitars. LOL

I was showing Dennis the ear protection we use. Mine are sold at Monster Truck pulls and some hunting clubs as they are light weight, solid and protective. Tim uses those tiny things. He can't hear me half the time, but I think that might be by choice.

Tim and Mary, this guitar is looking so good. I really appreciate all the hard work. Astounding at every stage! Couldn't be more pleased.
For the rest of you. Tim tells me this box emits a belly rumble type sonic when he is using a sander. I am psyched about the tonal possibilities!
