Default Lutherie as rehab

Here’s a moving story in today’s N.Y. Times about a Kentucky program helping addicts get clean by teaching them to build stringed instruments. Some of their work will be shown at NAMM.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/a...core-ios-share

This is a quote from the guy who founded the program, it’s deep in its simplicity:
“We’re dusty old woodworkers, not trained therapists. But so many times now, giving somebody something to do has proved to be a powerful step in their recovery.”

That's a wonderful article with such a strong message of hope, for those who need it. The personal stories and images are powerful. Very well written. Give me a piece of wood, some tools, guidance and caring, magic can happen. Thanks for posting it Frostie. One of the most meaningful threads in a long time.

Given the number of often-excellent musicians with the same problem I've known over the years, an idea whose time is long overdue...

If I remember aright, the recidivism rate among participants in the program (the overall program, not just the lutherie section) has dropped by 50%. So, yes.
